[HEM] $EV in 1-table SNGs  0
Maybe some of you have already read about it in my blog, but I've analysed my recet SNGs earlier on and I've discovered a strange thing - some of those SNGs were well played. Good pushing range, no coinflips and my $EV for those tournaments is sometimes 7 times lower than my amount won from this single tourney.

So here's my question - is my analysis wrong and do I have to change something in my game? Or maybe $EV isn't as important here as for example AI EV in cash games?

I think this stat in HEM isn't worth anything, because I finished one SNG on 4th place and it's one of two with -$EV in HEM, but it's big one, -$0.84. But when I'm looking at hands I played only TWO are -$EV, one is -$0.01 and one is -$2.19 and this second one is on the bubble when I've open shoved with smallest stack my 99, which is obvious shove, isn't it?

I'm not that familiar with this, but does the $EV also include fold equity?
If not, then it's definately not worth much.
If it is like that then it's totally normal to be in -EV since your pushing range in SNGs is usually much wider than the opponents calling range, meaning when the EV-stat comes into affect you're dominated fairly often.

I can tell you if you are doing wrong just by giving your ev. There is a lot more involved in your poker game. From what i know you are at the beginning of your poker experience and it's possible that this is your first downswing.
As stated above EV is a lot more important on cash games. You also need to know the variance is different on sngs and tournaments compared to cash games. Still, as you know variance is killed by volume. The most important thing is not to get tiltted and if you get tileted to take a brake from poker and secondly and as important as that is to strictly respect the bankroll management.
On sngs or tournaments you should only register to those that their registration value is maximum 5% of your bankroll. For example with a 100 dollars bankroll your registration fee should be max 5 dollars.
Good luck!

My sample is too small to even look at my ROI, but I'm sure it isn't downswing, I just worried about the difference between my EV and winnings, because my EV is +/- 0, sometimes little bit over, sometimes below.

But I think this $EV is just worthless crap, because it's based on just one hand and the outcome , so when I my 99 shove was called by QQ it's obvious that I'm way behind and my equity is pretty low and this $EV includes just one hand in my opponents range, so it's at least stupid IMO.

@Macubaas - my bankroll managment is fine, I was just wondering why such stupid stat is included in HEM, because it's obvious I'm -EV with 99 vs. QQ, but it's also obvious that I'm EV+ with 10BB push with 99 at bubble. This stat includes only the outcome of this single hand, so there isn't any folding equity, pushing/calling ranges, which means it's worthless in SNGs when it comes to bubble or very late stages.

Thanks for the feedback.

Agree with the not getting tilted part,it's a problem many players have.
If you're a tilty player I'd suggest you to play on a site that has something called "bankroll protection",where you can block yourself from playing certain limits/it only lets you buy in up to the maximum buy in you choose.

Don't agree with the 5% rule though.
It's a rule many players choose, but unless you constantly want to move up and down I'd suggest much more, because it can really get on a players nerve when he has to drop down several limits.
I myself use a 1% rule for SNGs,meaning a downswing doesn't hurt me that hard and I can still play in a relaxed manner. I'm usually 8-12 tabling though,so it's necessary to have some more reserves obv.
Downswining about 15 buy ins in a long session isn't that rare,so the 5% rule isn't something I'd recommend.

Of course it depends on which games do you play and how much tables do you play. I don't think that anybody would play 10 tables with 20 buy ins, it's hard to play that way on 4 tables IMO. But there is also no sense in playing 1 table, because first of all you get bored and it also dosen't really make difference in your game when you play 1, or 3-4 tables.

I'd also like to have like 40 buy ins for my limit when I start playing, but right now I just can't play that way so I've to overcome it and manage to actually build my bankroll to safe size and then move on to NL2. As long as I'm still learning I don't want to deposit, because I'd like to do that when I'll have significant amout of money to deposit, of course to get more money from 1st deposit bonus. So after some swings my bankroll managment isn't perfect, but I've set myself the moment when I'll move to perhaps $0.5 45 man SNGs, so I won't lose everything (I hope I won't xD).
