Posted by Macubaas: t but on long term the skill is much more important
not to be rude, but the question wasn't "is poker a skill game?" - it was "is poker a sport"
Check some definitions of "sport" - poker doesn't really qualify.. You have to apply a very loose definition if you consider it a sport. I don't really think it's the correct word.

OK. I see lot of confused people here... " Sport is a physical or mental activity that man performs according to the established set of rules, in order to contest with an opponent or opposing team, using the prescribed scoring system on the basis that determines the winner. Sports are divided into two groups: group and individual."
So chess is sport....poker is sport....
------------ BTW I found this definition in book from University of sport in Belgrade...

no one is confused the term sport is "nowadays" a matter of view. according to this you may call "throwing coins" a sport aswell ? it has rules, you have two teams etc..and the one who throw a coin nearest to the wall is the winner and may collect all the coins.

I think according to the dictionary definition that poker is not a sport, I believe it's defined as an athletic activity (although how golf slides in and gets called a sport is besides the point). Definitely a game of skill much like chess and preferable to many "sports" like golf.
