Audio books.. I could hardly imagine anything worse.. Seriously, I would have such terrible pacing issues - I can't imagine having an entire book vocalised to me.. Give me old-fashioned reading any day.

Not picking s**t or anything b1gfoot, but do you read books otherwise ? Novels ? Non-fiction books that interest you ? Anything like that.. Just curious, audio books seem a strange choice for somebody I am assuming is not vision-impaired..(?)

Unless you've got them on whilst driving, I guess I always catch public transport when I go places, so having a poker book to read is great, because just in case spending most of my time at home playing poker, most of the day at work on poker forums wasn't enough; I can now also read about poker between home and work.

dont know how much this applies to specified book or poker books in general but i think you are wrong.
B1gfoot might just be a verbal learner.

visual learners prefer to learn by reading, looking at pictures etc.
most of the college/university people are used to reading from books from beginning so most of them are visual learners. when they are provided with audio information, they tend to form visual mental presentation to learn. these are kind of people who will prefer to read from books rather than attend lectures.

verbal (audio) learner prefer to learn by listening to others or hearing themselves speak what they read.
they prefer to attend lectures rather than reading books.
audio learning is not popular among students because of lack of media and takeover by audio-visual learning.

both verbal and visual learning involve different circuitry, thats why combined audio-visual learning has higher retention power.

Yes I agree with what you're saying SuperNoob, except that isn't exactly what I was getting at.. I just couldn't imagine having to have something read out to me, it would really bother me that I wouldn't be setting the pace. I would find it extremely frustrating having content spoken to me simply because I couldn't skip things, go slower, faster, jump back easily, etc. Basically - I would be driven crazy by giving up control.

In term of actually learning, of course you're correct; There are various ways people retain information and it obviously varies for different people what method works best. Which is why I am curious if B1foot is a reader in general, but for some reason prefers audio books for poker or what ?

Maybe as you say, it's a learning thing. I really am just interested as I find it an odd choicel; to take an audio book over the written word - most people I know would much prefer to read content themself unless they were for someone reason unable too.

I am not a huge reader, but I do have a few books by the bedside, the two main reason, well three I went for audio is, 1 So I can listen whilst I work, sometimes I can spend a whole week with just myself, so thought why not use that time, 2 When I do read poker books, of cause I know it all, LOL, and tend to go blar blar blar and skip bits, this way I am forced to listen to it all and finally most of my poker literature is on the PC and its crap to read from a screen, suppose I could use amazon but the internet can provide some handy links.
As for actual learning, I have been in the building game since I left school, there is no book that can teach you how to swing a hammer, lots of people can look at architect drawings and understand it, know how it should be built but are unable to do so, I think with anything learning should be a combination of verbal and visual.
Its actually the first time I have ever DL a audio book, and must say I quite enjoyed it.

LOL - I was actually thinking this may be a key reason.. Personally - I would MUCH prefer an audio book over trying to read a pdf over on a PC screen.

Really wouldn't mind getting an e-reader actually, got my brother a NOOK-Colour e-reader for his 30th a few months back and been kind of jealous since.. Like you I'm a bit of a, shall we say 'pirate' and would benefit greatly from an e-reader..

Yes, more so even - I can pretty much ONLY learn from actually doing.. I like to read poker pokers simply to let a couple vague ideas swim around in my head, certainly not with the intention of applying them 100% or taking in all the content..

I cant stand those e-readers at all.
Its the same thing like sitting in front of a pc or a laptop, while reading should be something that takes you away from all these things.
Some things must be old fashioned original in order to enjoy Smile

^ Kindles use "e-ink" which is actually quite different - it only refreshes when you change a page, so its actually a LOT less strain on the eyes

------------
NOOK is LCD / which is a little harsh on the eyes after a while, but still much more readable than your average LCD screen
