Hi,,,I thought I would let those who dont know allready about The World Community Grid,, as this site is non profit making and does research fo the good of us all I dont think admin will mind me promoting it,, The World Community Grid lets you install a program that runs unnoticed on your computer while you are working or playing, your computer recieves research projects from various locations and then churns away crunching numbers and then sends the results back to the main grid..... It is easy to install and will not slow down or interfere with your machine as long as your machine isnt to ancient it will cope with all tasks given to it .. The site does research into cancer,aids,global weather,drug research and others , you pick what you want your machine to work on

Hey Artic that sounds very interesting, I will def check it out. What a genius idea. If it doesn't slow my comp down and there is no hidden tricks/scam you can count me in. Would love to help research about cancer for example. People are dropping like flies because of that decease including my family

Its no scam man....it wont slow yer machine,,,,u can set up how much processer u want to give it and harddrive,,,,,,,,go for it,,, thats what i mean,,,our machines do very little work that they where designed to do this is a no tricks site,,,no spyware nothing,,,all it is is a site where u can donate your com time for research,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,hey!! remember to sign up for the bankrollmob research team,,,,why not,,,,,,

It is not scam but it is not SETI also. It seems to me when i looked at research projects they are doing at this time that all those projects are researched by non-profit organizations that receive funds from sponsors and mostly governments. While i dont have nothing against finding a cure for those diseases i do have something (multiply this by lets say million) against for-profit organizations trying to share their expenses with those people that will in the end pay for their products.
If you search deaper into those non-profit organizations you will find members of various investment corporations in Board of Trustees, non-profit organizations Board of Directors, and if you really want i could try to digg deeper and see if any of those Investment corporations are owners or have their share in any of the for-profit research institutes related to research subjects of those non-profit organizations. Another thing about these non-profit organizations is that they are used as bridges to suck out money from country/state budget and make them available to for-profit organizations as if they were their own. Which should not be done because if you receive money to invest in research for some disease from public budget, results from that research should be available to public and not sold to the public. This way for-profit organizations can say we never received any money from state government and they can claim patent in its entirety, and make huge profits by doing so.
SETI@home was project started when US government decided that it is not profitable to pay for that project and researchers came up with idea to process data they collect on peoples PC`s because funding was significantly decreased and they had to cut costs.

Ok follow this. Go to world community home page. There are projects that are curently being researched. Click on more info about project and there will be a name of another non-profit organization which has actually initiated the research from world community. Go to home page of that institution, ive used aids research program because it is US based organization and has more info than french one on their site, and look at board of trustees and sponsors on Scripps research institute and you will find basic financial statement on their page too. You will see that they dont mention any public research whatsoever only sponsored and governement funded research.
EXAMPLE: Help conquer cancer project. 1st in the list on research page. This is run in cooperation with Ontario cancer institute. Go to ontario cancer institute and youll see that they are part of UHN (University health network). Dont stop there but search throught site which is all marketing or go to this newsletter link directly and look in section 5 of that newsletter or seaerch for term "Tarceva".
That is medicaly tested drug that prolong life of terminal lung cancer patients which is now being sold freely to the market. YES IT IS AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC but follow this link to see at what prices.

Ok ,, so you have made your point the money men are in the chain which comes as no surprise but as i pointed out all research done by this site is available in the public domain , however as we live in a society dominated by capitalism it is no surprise to see profit taking, I live in a country which luckily for me has a national health service which over the last few years has suffered from cost cutting and threats of privatisation,, however to the end user me and many otheres excellent health care is delivered at no direct cost,,, of course this care has to be paid for somehow, thats is why we pay a national insurance stamp taking weekly from our wages, so in the end money is there to pay those who provide the drugs and care. This argument you put forward at the begining if I remember is that sites like these adversely affect goverment funding for research, this also may be true, however in the real world governed by capitalism and private gain these things happen and however much we dislike them not contributing computer time from tens of thousands of machines, which in the main do nothing apart from entertain there users is a sin,,,no matter how you argue your point this site is and was ment to be for the good of all , so even if capitalists do take advantage as capitalism is based apon exploitation it is an evil that I can tolerate and I will continue to donate and encourage others to donate something that they wont miss or not even know they have , vacant computer time and space,,, giving nothing that u will miss in the knowledge that it will however it gets there deliver life or ease the pain of a fellow human being can not be wrong,,,,in principle this site stands on the high ground of morallity and if as you say it is open to abuse by capitalists so be it.,,, I did take the time to follow your links and yes the cost of these drugs is sinful , ,,,, so I presume you wont be downloading the software, will this be your stand against capitalism , withholding com time from this site based on your argument is morally wrong,,,,I would also direct you to the Grids community forum where this argument has been more fully entered into in the past and I am sure any worries you have on the motivationial attributes of this site would be put at ease,,,,,gl

Please dont get me wrong ArcticCorsair, I share your motives completely because even if those meds come at high prices it is good to know there are any at all. No argue about that. I just wanted to point out that this is not something which will benefit society in a way we would all like to see, low cost meds for serious diseases.
I only wish there will be some research institute in the near future which will produce medications for the public, not profit.
I will just mention example from my country where we still have national health care system if not the same then very similar to yours. Same problems with capitalism here.
Until 1991 we were socialist or even communist type of society and there is our pharmaceutical company which was quite succesful in inventing new types of drugs. In its labs was invented Azytromicin which was and to my knowledge still is the strongest antibiotic there is. Why i am mentioning this. You dont need capitalist type of research to produce results. Of course equipment is needed and scientist must be payed. This company was recently acquired by Barr pharmaceuticals and was largest stock purchase in my country so far. After Barr acqusition price of meds produced by this company doubled. No real justification for this because company was and still is making large amounts of profits and furthermore these are all common usage meds that has been sold on the market for over 30 years, equivalents of Aspirin and other no prescription drugs, and since we too have national health care system who knows at what prices are prescription drugs sold. Only thing that i have noticed is that more and more prescription drugs are being imported and this is not because they are better or more effecetive but only because they were made cheaper with price increase of domesticaly produced drugs.
So, in the end, world community grid should be helping society and has potential of becoming probably the greatest implementation of internet so far, but this is not the case at the moment. Those research institutes get payed 3 times from endusers. First they receive large amounst of money from the goverments, second they cut their costs by using our computers and finally if any of us is unlucky to be in need of those meds, one actually pays unjustifiably high price for medication one needs. Managers of those research institutes receive large pay offs and bonuses and that is all there is. Thinking does not cost billiions of dollars and one cluster type supercomputer which will cover their needs costs under 10 million dollars. I know that i will inspire lots of "Thats life" thoughts but exactly that kind of thinking is making all of you who think like that to "hibernate" through life not doing a single thing to change it. It is not much to at least say this is wrong but it can help enlighten others who may have better ideas how to solve this. With "Thats life" philosophy people in power stay in power and have open doors for doing everything they want.

ok i agree with both of you, i know that this is rotten world, where money motivates people, and only money is meaning of doing something, and the big firms only search for the way how to screw littlepeople, and of course charge them for that action, but it's nice when at least you think you can help some higher cause to be done, and after all if it doesn't take my time and effort, if it only uses my comp time, than why not.... between all of the stupid things i've done in my life, one more thing won't kill me, so i'll try.... why not also would want to say good job, both to ArcticCorsair and Predobar for the time it took them to write this dialogue , i might have learnt something today!!!

Ok Predobar I will bite ,, If you visit the grids forum , which i dare you to do! , you will find on there pages many arguments such as those you have put forward and you will find every one has been replied to, I really suggest that you go to the forum and put forward the arguments that you have placed in the above threads. I think you will find an overwhelming response against your arguments and the replies will be much more educated than mine from people who have giving years of com time and more with no gain sought for or recieved,, I have already agreed that capitalistic ideals seep into almost every endeavour attempted within our society, however your attacks on the grid I feel hold no wieght and are driven by political ideals ,,, gl,, visit the grids forum you will be shot down in flames,,,,

I will take a look at it this weekend. Ive been busy creating bankrolls with freerolls on sites that i usually dont play so ive only stopped by to see what was going on. It is political issue, everything IS in these days, i dont like brutal capitalism at all because in the end no matter what you do there is only 2 possible outcomes. In most cases those who have power will gain more of it, and in rare cases one is able to make compromise and become bigger fish in the pool. For now these are the only outcomes. Sad, but true. Master of puppets etc.
