Day 3: Poll 3
Imagine a very rich man and a poor man were playing HU poker. The two men don't know each other but are playing best of 5 heads up. For the poor man if he loses every game he will be bankrupt whereas the rich man regularly plays much higher stakes and the money in these five games means very little to him.
Based on this information alone who is more likely to win the best of 5?

My initial thought is 'the poor man would want to win more' and would be more driven and blah blah blah.. But poker isn't a fight to the death - sure, if somebody has everything to lose their adrenaline kicks in and in certain situations that is an advantage.. but not in all situations and on closer thought, with poker I think this:
Assuming they were both trying their hardest to win, I think the edge would go to the rich man; Playing under pressure causes mistakes, I think the poor man would suffer from the classic "scared money" syndrome.. Less likely to make moves, risk his stack on small edges, etc. The rich man would be able to play his A-Game and gamble when necessary, the poor man would be more likely IMHO to 'nit-it-up'. I think unless the poor man had the good fortune of good hole cards and connecting flops he would probably get beat by somebody more willing to put everything on the line in more situations.

Voted for the rich man, if the poor man knew how to play poker, he woudn't be poor . loool. Rich mans know how to make money, the poor guy would be always afraid of losing and folding, the poor guy isn't managing his bankroll, .... and on and on

The rich man apparently has the knowledge to make money and possibly play the game. The poor man is apparently hasn't found his nitch in life to where he knows how to make money. Not that some people just are born poor and don't ever get an opportunity to capitalize or even get the chance to make money. Hopefully the poor man wins by catching all the breaks in the game.

Going to go against the grain. The poor man will win, he is playing with the risk of losing everything so must be confident in his skills. The rich man must doubt himself, he will play in a manner leaving himself open to traps and bad calls thinking it does not matter if he loses.

While the poor will have to play his best game, he is also scared for what might happen by losing the money so his play is more controlled. The rich on the other hand doesnt give a cent for the money and he keeps pushing the poor with big raises and all ins. I think the rich has more chances. But all this without having luck in mind

i'd have to say the rich man as he can afford to make more moves than the poor man as the poor man would probably have to wait on good cards before putting any of his money at risk.

Agreed. Poker skills being equal my money is on the guy who is not worried about the outcome and can play a natural game vs. the guy who has everything to lose, is probably waiting for better hands and making it more obvious to his opponent which hands he has to dodge.

At first: the poor man in this case have a bad bankroll management And the rich man can play a agressive style and he need this in a hu game. I think the poor man i playing to tight because he had not enough money behind

Most people seems to agree that the bad bankroll management and the high risk=tight play factor are strong factors that go against the poor man. But is the rich man any more reliable? If you don't care at all about the money, isn't that worse than caring too much? It's possible the rich man will soon get bored whilst the poor man will never lose concentration. I do however think pressure is a huge contributing factor and the poor man might make mistakes.
