What is luck?  0
I think the most complex question so far:

Are some people luckier than others? If so, how do you define luck and can you make yourself lucky?

To quote someone or other, "The more I practice the luckier I get". So yes, to some degree you can make your own "luck".

Luck -

1. Good fortune and prosperity by sheer chance.

2. Fate or one's lot in life.
When I struck the lottery twice, that was pure luck.

3. Something donks that snap call my shoves with trash and then hit always seem to fucking have Aww crap! Aww crap! Aww crap! Aww crap! Aww crap!

I vote for first options...
Maybe because I'm optimistic, and good people seems lucky Big Smile

But in fact - I don't know, how categorize luck... sometimes we think that someone is lucky, but maybe it's only effect of his hard work?

If you don't try, you will never be lucky!

One of my favorite sayings is "You miss 100% of the swings you don't take". Not trying is a sure path to failure Smile

Yes they are.The common sense notion of ‘luck’ is that it’s what you get when you mix chance with benefit; and both have to be present.
The system that people can use to become luckier:
1) Maximise Your Chance Opportunities
2) Listen to your Lucky Hunches
3) Expect Good Fortune
4) Turn Bad Luck into Good
So be lucky from now that you know how to. Smile

I've watched a tv show about this before. Although people are right in their own subjective observations of what luck is. Or whether or not they are lucky. There is no such thing as luck. Only mindset.

'Lucky' people always have and optimistic outlook on life. 'Unlucky' people always have a pessimistic outlook on life.

Some people are bound to disagree with that. But this was a scientific test conducted in a casino in which they gave people money to gamble and then at the end they told their experiences.

The 'lucky' people on average won about the same as the 'unlucky' people did on average, they just looked upon it in a more positive manner.

Of course. I expect it simply follows a normal (Gaussian) distribution, where most people are close to the median, having average luck, some of the people are extraordinarily lucky, and some are extraordinarily unlucky as well...

It doesn't average out for individuals, if only for the reason that the human lifespan is limited (unless you are extremely lucky and live forever, but that would just support my argument even more...).

Nice article and it has several good points in creating luck by increasing one's odds therefore increasing one's luck.
I've been doing a bit of research myself with the lottery and my luck has improved based on where I stood 3 months ago. And prior of doing a bit of homework I used the same numbers for over a year, but after doing some basic analysis of the data I've won more free tickets, money and overall feel better about my chances in actually hitting a larger sum of money.

Just saying the concept of your article has truth to it! Good LUCK All! Smile

From the dictionary:

Luck

1. A word used to describe your opponent hitting one of 4 outs for a $60 pot on the river, while you hit trip kings on the flop.

2. Being a virgin and being invited to the Playboy Mansion

I find luck is created by possitive thinking, when you angry and in denial about any move
You make seems to create badluck for me anyways.
Also the more you play the more chances you have at being lucky.

Just got round to reading this and I was surprised about how much sense it makes. I've heard a lot about how thinking positively can create luck and I never really agreed before. I also heard that you can't win if you don't enter and that lucky people enter more competitions and take more chances. At this point I disagreed with those being lucky people since I thought they could also have lost more but you wouldn't hear from those losers. Unlucky gambling addicts often think they will win next time so clearly thinking positively is no guarantee of luck.

But the article makes sense when it says knowing more people, being open to opportunities and looking for positives will improve your chances for most things. I do wonder however, how much of the improvement in luck it speaks of, stems from the positive attitude factor that sadamman mentioned. In other words, since they expect to be lucky, they will remember their experiences differently and they won't actually win anymore, which could be theoretically dangerous, misremembering how much you lose and encouraging oneself to take extreme risks that are very -ev financially or emotionally.

I am as you may have guessed quite the pessimist, which may be the reason I don't consider myself to be very lucky, more so in my personal life than when I'm gambling. I come from a working-class family who are generally pessimistic, non-risk taking, content with their lot and will testify to having never won anything. I do think that fortunate people have a tendency to get more and more lucky and people who suffer problems with money, health, relationships or career-path tend to go from bad to worse. People born into wealthy, well-connected families have much greater chance of going to their favoured school or university, well-employed people will find getting their next job easier and those who are successful in love have a positive attitude towards meeting new people. Whereas if you are on the verge of losing your house you tend to resort to unwise desperate measures, you lose friends and support and are far more likely to get stuck in a rut and keep losing more.

it's amazing what the human mind can do, people get better from believing a placebo is curing their ailment, i personally always try to see the good in things, and i find i get on with a wide range of people because of it.
for more in depth info about the power of the human mind check out some of derren browns shows, especially hero at 30,000 ft. that really had an impact on me.
i remember years ago seeing a newspaper article about some uni boffins working out the formula for luck, and seeing this thread reminded me about it enough to find that article i posted, anyway the 1 thing from the original article that really stuck out for me was the part about not always being in the same places all the time, in short the more varied the places you go to the more lucky you will tend to be. and of course you always have to be in it to win it. trust me i love comps/prize draws for good reason Blink
