Hello good day!!

It's been 4 crazy and losing streak months, due to lack of knowledge about bankroll management.i won from $10 to $150 overnight like 3 to 4 hours of play, then in the morning i play i have a very very big downswing, is that a standard in poker? because of the variance that i risk?

my always deposit is only 10 - 20 $ , which is i can only afford due to i am just a student, not have a day job . which is not a good start to play with? btw, I'm from The philippines which is very hard to fine a decent job here, lol need to be a graduate student in order to have a good job. Smile

maybe i will get a time-off to poker, and continue my studies first(graduating student).then reading some more more articles and books about poker Smile. maybe soon in the near future i will build up my bankroll.

feel free to post your thoughts, comments, and opinions Smile

It means that you played ignoring the rules of bankroll management.

Absolutely.

First, read some articles on bankroll management. Choose the strictest bankroll management and try to play again. If you find that you have problems sticking to your plan, then go and continue your studies.

About bankroll management it really matters what do you usually play...

For example if you want to play cash games you need to have at least 25 buy ins, and even more for mtt. My advice is to start with low buy ins SNG if you deposit 10 - 20 dollars

Cash game is a cancer for new players. Almost every new poker player lacks discipline. Everyone wants to make a million from a mere $10s after reading all those success stories. To learn discipline play double up SnGs first, learn some bankroll management, get accustomed with draws and pot odds, take breaks after downswings and don't take poker too serious Smile

I don't think it's "standard" exactly to have a downswing as high as an upswing right after each other. Just cos you don't play good br management doesn't guarantee a huge loss, it really depends on if you're increasing the initial buy-in too and how much of the initial win came from luck.

Bankroll management is important if you're a regular player who has a large roll to protect. If you're a decent player but you don't play often and you like to play a bit of poker when you have money to deposit, there's nothing wrong with depositing 20 dollars and taking 10 straight on to a table. I only say take 10 so you have two chances and you have protection from one bad beat but this is appalling brm and you shouldn't try and make money this way. But if you want to have fun for maybe an hour or two, you could stand to win some extra money through a combination of luck and skill. If you build up a decent stack from, 10 to say 60 you might want to leave the table, put some aside so you know you're up, and take 30 to a higher stakes table, assuming you're prepared to lose it all as quickly.

You can make a decent night profit and have fun if you lose it by playing like this occasionally. The next morning after making 150, I would withdraw it all except 20 for next time. It's either that or use the 150 to start funding your serious online bankroll but then you have to drop back down to 0.1/0.2 stakes and play for long hours taking it seriously and what student wants to do that? If you decide to play occasional recreational online poker though it has to stay less than once a week. If you start thinking 'wow I can do this full time' and start chasing a profit you will need brm or every time you hit a bad beat you want to buy back in and before you know it you've cleaned out your bank account by riding a long downswing.

This is my mentality when I play live in a casino or at a mate's house. I don't think what I can afford to spend on poker that month, just what I can lose that night and be happy. More often than not I leave with a nice win but I don't expect it and cos I never delve into my bank account once I lose, my bankroll isn't really important.

Good advise !! Looks like you play cash game, right ? $10 to $ 150 in 3 - 4 hours is wonderful !! I hope you didn't lost it all in the downswing. S n g or micro buy in MTT is more save. poker is hard world, create frustrating a lot so need strong mental. Not bad too try, but relax , force too much just make our play worst. Good luck. Smile

i'd say you can ignore any bankroll management when you go from $0 to any amount, since you do not lose any of your own money, but if you are making deposits, and that money means something to you, then some sort of rules that define how you spend your cash must be in place, downswings are a common thing to any poker player, upswings is not such common though Big Smile

it's good to take breaks, don't play 7 days in a week if you are anxious about sitting down on the poker table again, 1 day off a PC can do real magic
it's important that you keep a cool head, if the burn comes along you should stop and never drop your guard- the Poker after Dark intro actually says it all Blink
Bankrollmanagement is the holy bible!!!
The best thing is to work on your game and analyse, analyse, analyse, analyse... the opponents and yourself.
My personal advice. Sit at the Pokertable, don't look at your Bankroll and play like you would hv to pay 10000$ bills at the end of the month Blink

It's more common than you realize son. That's why you call it poker!
You win some you loose some.
