Hi mobsters, the question is: Do you think that the choice of a nickname can influence the way opponents react to his way of playing? I got this in my mind because of the FTOPS XXI Leaderboard today’s leader nickname, which is callyoudownn. With a nick like this, the first impression is he should be a calling station, easy to pass through. But being leading this leaderboard, he must have some nice concepts of the game and the strategy to use in each part of it. So, do many opponents felt on this trap or this has nothing to do with the game? Tell me about it!

It definitively should not influent you to making decisions because of nickname... I mean If someone have nickname "alwaysbluffin" and you are playing first hand with him you will call him with anything on your hand? I mean, He still can have serious hand... Always take your time to read other players at the table

I don't really know if it affects the way I play against people; but certain nicknames definitely cause me to make assumptions about the intelligence of the beholder.
Things that generally make me think somebody is a bit thick/dull/stupid/moronic
* Cars - when people name themselves after models / manufactures of cars * National names - like GermanPaul, UKPete, etc. * Names with clear spelling errors - particularly when people write 'loose' when they clearly mean 'lose' - all I can say is F**K it must be embarrassing to permanently have a type/spelling error in your online handle. Complete fail * Any use of '666', '420', other ridiculous clichés.
On the other hand - I think more of the intelligence / culture of people when their handle includes
*clever puns ! (ok - maybe that is an oxymoron statement - but seriously, I love puns). * References to good books (for example somebody naming themselves after a character in one of my favourite novels, obviously this is an incredibly biased judgement!) * References to funny memes/internet culture - for example a guy on PKR called 'Nekminnut" (he's from NZ too )

I used to pay attention, in the nicknames when i started playing poker, but no more. Cause no matter what the name is, ive played against all sort of types of play.
The only thing that annoys me (the least ) is when i see someone using as a nickname, the name, or variation of a name from a famous person or a celeb. And im not talking about poker, im talking in general. Just pathetic

At the starting stages of my poker i used to experience a bit of influence from the so called "nicknames " but eventually after playing a lot i have overcome it.
still sometimes there are a few weird yet eye catching and influential nicknames i have fallen for their nicknames and sometimes i have seen players who play as their nickname tells !!!
lastly nicknames are sometimes truly influential but not all times !!!!!! Good luck at the tables .

Oh yeah - that is really awful - can't believe I forgot about those ! Good call!
Although, personally I find the Poker-Celebrity names the WORST! It's just like they're aiming for mediocrity! Imagine calling yourself PhilIvey or something and then working your way up to the nosebleeds! You would look like such a total twat!

I don't give players nicknames much thought for the most part although I do believe some make their names up for intimidation purposes. Some are poker related nicks and others are just in poor taste, bad intent and very rude. You know like "whosyourdaddy" or "yomama" and crap like that. I don't think some should even be allowed, but there's no way to monitor 10,000 nicks so ignore the names and play your game.

Well I personally do not care what someones online nickname is at all. What i want to know is what type of poker player they are. I take notes about the players I play against oftain and even use the color change feature it mark player i see multi tabling along with me oftain. These notes have both made and saved me money.
