there is absolutely no doubt in my mind how this happened. I have seen it happen many time personally. It was obviously a tournament with late registration still going on. The player got taken out in 37th place then more players bought in and the count down reset itself at the new levels and started counting down again. I personally HATE rebuy tournaments and tourny's with long late registration periods.

Well if memory serves that tournament has a 60 minute extended late registration period. so my first answer is still valid where a player busted out before other register late after they was done.

the ipoker lobbies fook up all the time. its rediculous how they cant keep up with whats going on lol. i always see a player is still in when in fact he got knocked out ages ago.
for the OP, it's definitely a late registration issue.

It has happened to me before but not in Poker Stars. All it needs is some lag on the results. The last time that this happened i checked the standings and i was about 25 places out of the money. With my stack had no chance of reaching the money, and while i just had posted SB went all in. Lost and when the pop up window comes up, with me out, only needed 1 more player for the money. But ive learned since then not to trust the standings on ipoker

It happens from time to time on all sites actually, something similar happend to me on 888poker lately...
From what i noticed and heard from other people it happens on tournaments with many participants registered. Still the final result is the same just the tournament lobby is wrong.

It is usually due to late entrants and can seem somewhat confusing and I have seen it a lot on 888 especially. Other than the respective system messing up, is the possibily any other explanation for this apparent phenomena?
