So I've developing a new site for myself (will share the site here when it's done) and noticed today that there was a dramatic spike in my unique users. To the tune of several thousands. I thought this quite curious, so I went to log in to the site itself and found myself unable to login, even though I KNEW I was putting the right password in.
So it turns out for the last week word press sites have been under heavy fire, by an as of yet undiscovered hacker. The hack attempts are basically low end brute force attempts, which would make you think it's the work of some amateur script kiddies, but the scale of the attacks seems to suggest otherwise.
My advice to anyone hosting a WP based site (not just on WP.com but USING the WP infrastructure) to change their passwords to a VERY strong password, and to urge your users to do so as well.
Strong password: J8J)*^H#*()Ukjhn*& Not a strong password: pleasehackme god or password etc etc
