What's Next: History favors division leaders For contenders such as Royals, Astros, Memorial Day an important benchmark By Doug Miller / MLB.com
Memorial Day is full of somber remembrance but also seasonal celebration. We honor those who gave their lives protecting the United States and its freedoms while serving in the military, but we find time to cut loose at backyard barbecues and fete the coming of June and summer proper. And so it goes that during the course of this very American holiday, we can't escape the increasingly intriguing storylines of the summer game, which will steam right into its third month by the end of the week.

Davis nearly loses homer for missing plate After Brewers challenge, replay restores first of outfielder's two dingers By Adam McCalvy / MLB.com
MILWAUKEE -- Brewers left fielder Khris Davis had to wait out a replay review in Monday's 8-4 loss to the Giants after his first-inning home run was nullified because the plate umpire ruled he didn't touch home. Three minutes and 15 seconds later, Davis got his home run back. Davis had connected against Giants starter Tim Lincecum for a homer to right field that by all appearances gave the Brewers a 1-0 lead at Miller Park. But the Giants appealed at home plate, where umpire Will Little called Davis out, ruling he'd missed home plate after circling the bases. The Brewers challenged that ruling, and the call was overturned after a review.

Felix bests Archer with four-hit shutout By Troy Provost-Heron and Greg Johns / MLB.com
ST. PETERSBURG -- The Mariners hit a go-ahead home run off Rays closer Brad Boxberger for the second consecutive night, this one a three-run shot off the bat of Nelson Cruz, to give Seattle a 3-0 win over Tampa Bay. Boxberger came in to relieve Chris Archer in the top of the ninth and proceeded to strike out Mike Zunino and Austin Jackson to start the inning, but walked Seth Smith and Robinson Cano to bring Cruz to the plate. After getting ahead 1-0, Cruz launched a ball over the center-field wall and into the Rays' Touch Tank. It was only the fourth home run to land in the Touch Tank all-time. Felix Hernandez came out on top of the pitching duel between him and Archer. Hernandez earned his eighth win of the season after tossing a four-hit shutout. Archer surrendered just two hits in eight scoreless frames while striking out a season-high 12 batters.
