Let's play (the equivalent of) 2! Mets win in 18
ST. LOUIS -- It took the Mets 13 innings to score a run, and that still wasn't enough, but with Tuesday's scheduled starter Carlos Martinez working his fourth inning for the Cardinals, New York finally pulled away in the 18th for a 3-1 win at Busch Stadium on Sunday that lasted five-hours and 55 minutes. It was the second game of 14 or more innings between the teams this season and the third Major League game to go 17 or more innings, as the teams combined to strand 39 runners, including 25 by New York. Seven Cardinals' relievers combined to throw and 12 1/3 innings while six Mets' relievers threw a total of 10 1/3.

Nats get past Harvey, pad NL East lead
WASHINGTON -- The battle of the National League East began in earnest on Monday night at Nationals Park. Two games separated Washington and New York entering the game, but the Nationals increased their lead to three games by defeating the Mets, 7-2. After looking helpless against Dodgers aces Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke, the Nationals were able to handle Harvey without any problems. The Nationals plated two runs in the first inning, with Yunel Escobar highlighting the scoring with an RBI single. Clint Robinson had the big hit, a two-run double, two innings later.

Choo triples in 9th for Rangers' 8th cycle
DENVER -- Rangers outfielder Shin-Soo Choo has been looking for something to boost his sagging confidence. Hitting for the cycle might be just what he needs. Choo did that on Tuesday night at Coors Field, completing his work with a ninth-inning triple off reliever Rex Brothers in the Rangers' 9-0 victory over the Rockies. "I'm excited," Choo said. "I had four days off at the All-Star break, and that was a mental break. I'm feeling fetter. My confidence was coming back."

Home-cubbie king: Rookie's homers rile Reds Cincinnati-area product Schwarber belts tying, go-ahead shots to lead Cubs over Reds
CINCINNATI -- Cubs catcher Kyle Schwarber grew up in nearby Middletown, Ohio, as a Reds fan, looking up to a number of current and past Reds players. He said he knew of and followed Joey Votto, Jay Bruce and Todd Frazier, among other Reds legends such as Johnny Bench, Barry Larkin and Ken Griffey Jr. On Tuesday, under the bright lights of Great American Ball Park, he made sure they knew of him as well. With the Cubs trailing the Reds by two runs in the top of the ninth, Schwarber rocketed a four-seam fastball from J.J. Hoover to deep right field to tie the game. The two-run homer sent the game to extra innings, and he topped that with a solo shot in the 13th inning to lead the Cubs to a 5-4 victory.

Wilson escaped trouble over five innings and the Angels continued to roll in Southern California on Wednesday night, beating the Twins, 5-2, to increase their season-best winning streak to seven games. Huston Street finished the game by recording his 300th save, making him the 27th closer to reach the milestone. The 31-year-old right-hander became the second-youngest pitcher to reach the milestone, trailing only former Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez. He reached the 300-saves mark with the fifth-fewest save opportunities ever (347).

Torii full of pride watching Trout's evolution
ANAHEIM -- Torii Hunter watches Mike Trout, like so many others he has mentored over the years, with the unabashed pride of a parent -- or an involved big brother who has done his job well. "He's my guy," Hunter said of the reigning American League Most Valuable Player and two-time All-Star Game MVP. "Trout sat next to me [in the Angels' clubhouse] and asked me all the questions in the world. It feels good to see him put to good use things he learned when we were teammates here with the Angels. "I've got to commend his family -- his mom and dad -- for raising him right and teaching him those things that build character. You need to seek wisdom and understanding, and he's doing it here in the real world."
