During an interview on US TV channel CNBC, Logitech CEO Bracken Darrell has predicted that eSports shall become the biggest sport in the world. I believe you have no idea about gaming.
The same way some one is watching a world cup game in soccer for example,
the same way also there some others watching tournaments in esports.

It is a fact that it is a growing industry.

Besides that, there are also games, online ones, where you play for real money and you can win
real money also, cashing it out with many ways like neteller bank transfer etc.

Not the video games we used to know few years back... Things have changed...

Things have changed and corporations profit of this two much. Corporations know how to make money and because of this hey manage to gather large amounts of sporting events. The amounts of money that are running in this area are very high. It is important that the spectators or tv viewers to be happy.

I am a millenial, I think I know more about gaming then what you envision for me.
You are not getting my side of the argument. You watch real sports because you made an emotional investment in it one way or other.
Now why would any grown man or woman emotionally invest to watch a teenager from Korea with oily hair and acnee on his face play Starcarft/Fortnite/CoD?
Those twitch and youtube streams you or the guy in the article reference and cite for the 'popularity' are consumed mainly by pre-pubescent children who does not do anything other than play XboX.
But once they grown up their priorities will change too since none of us has the same hobbies and interests we once have as children.
The gaming industry is a huge entity no doubt, but the article is about e-sports which is a still just a spectacle - a sideshow if you will. Never going to claim a real slice from the 'media cake' because it serves a niche market and that market only.

Nowadays the Video Games competitions have grown in a way that the prizes to distribute are substantial, and the amount of people who follow them through social networks, when watching the tournaments is increasing.
