Poker has uncertain origins, it is believed to have its origins in the Persian game "ace nas" and the 18th century French card game Poque. It came to the United States through New Orleans in the 19th century, where it was popularized on the steamboats that sailed the Missippi River and the poker we know today formalized its rules of play in 1834 in the United States.
