Determining how much money you need in your bankroll to play poker is essential for maintaining a healthy financial strategy and enjoying the game without undue stress. A solid bankroll can help you withstand the inherent ups and downs of poker, allowing you to focus on your game rather than financial pressures.
The amount you should have depends on several factors, including the type of poker [...] Read more » How Much Money Do You Need in Your Bankroll to Play Poker?

It depends on each player, the time you have, the bank you have and many other factors, it is not easy to choose a number to be able to say that it is the optimal one, just play and try to study a lot to have solid strategies to win in the long term.
Posted by dule-vu: For tournament you dont need 100 x of bankroll!
You should aim for ~100 and actively manage and adjust for "normal" tournaments.
25 buy-ins not actively managed, during a bad run, bankroll would be halved in ~12 tournaments. 33 buy-ins actively managed, during a bad run, bankroll would be reduced by more than 30% in 12 tournaments.
A relevant aside: Daniel "Dnegs" when faced with similar bankroll situation in hes earlier days, grinded 100X tournaments and correctly leveraged cash games, however, once-in-a-while would risk up to 25% of his "Total Bankroll" on a large field, notable tournament, lose (as he did a few times) and go back to grinding @ correct level, cash some go back to grinding @ correct level, win heaps -reassess and go to grind @ correct level.
I believe there were other "rules" he had to meet or follow to allow this freedom and amount of leverage to be risked...

It depends on what you want to do, your objective is the most important thing, also playing within the bank is also important, sometimes we do not take this into account and we can fall into bankruptcy.
If you are going bankrupt, things have not gone well in life and or business, for probably a long time.
Transferring $1,000.00 of the Business overdraft or depositing off a personal Credit Card to a Poker site may tip everything into a no recovery situation and make the creditors take action, but it is not the poker itself that made this start, while overplaying your roll and relying on regular Credit Card top-up will not help.
Maybe if your Business or your personal finances are that bad, deposit as much as you can, then hold up your hands and say "whooops", cash assets get stripped, you start again with bugger all for day-to-day life but have a few thousand on various sites?

Each player is different, has different objectives, but if you want to play tournaments or cash games with peace of mind without becoming desperate for your bankroll, you have to play with more than 30 boxes or more, little by little you will learn.

It depends on each player because some make money with 5 dollars and others don't even make money with 500. It matters how well each person plays and the circumstances / luck. All of these can compare to each person how much money they need to play.

That approach can determine the potential outcomes or in some cases can help predict when brokeness occurs.
Or we can apply math, depending on the type of game structure and the paytable, we can determine the expected frequency of getting ITM and therefore calculate the nominal variance, this could determine the quantity of buy-ins you should hold.
If you are a s**t player on a bad run who does not plan for these bad runs it is a little matter of a little time until you are broke and reach peak brokeness, there is little we can do for those people in most regards.
If you are a improving/good/great player on a bad run who has planned for these bad runs, it is a matter of time before such a bad run ends and you still have adequate funds to play and it would only take one final table to move up the stakes.
The math for Cash, 6 max Sn'G and MTT's are vastly different, as long as you are aware of this point, it is a starting place to understand the why's and wherefore's of all of the above and could be the impetus to follow the advice and increasing your chances to prosper infinitely*.
3p out
* Your chances increase and not that you can prosper to infinity.
Yep, and the less peeps the less variance, then you can go to HU where variance is least, skill is most at the fore however unless you crush rake is gonna take most or all of your winnings.
