I've noticed nowadays that there are so many threads in the forum that you need more than one post a day to keep in the top 20. when I first joined threads would hang around for ages but now I find myself looking for threads that were really popular two days ago and finding them outside the top 40. I think ppl forget to post in threads when they arent on the first page which is annoying because there are some really good topics missed out on.
so my suggestion is to have a box next to the most recent threads with random old threads. say two of the threads outside the top forty alternating every day if possible so when a good thread that lost momentum or managed to slip under the radar first time round happens to appear in this box they have a second chance. what do you think?

Not a bad idea. But instead of random, it could also be based on views or replies (most reliable) in the "random" threads, to determine which will be shown on the frontpage.

All you have to do is post a reply in the thread to bump it to the first page and you can subscribe by mail if anyone replys. The thing I do is I click to go to my profile and look at the threads I recently posted in.

Basically I think that in addition to the current system there should be a box where older threads appear so if popular they make a comeback ie get bumped back up to the top of the forum. if not popular they stay where they are. not everyone subscribes to every post they like GeneYuss

I don't think this new box should be based on views or replies because the most popular threads are more likely to be already taken as far as they can go. ie everyone who would post has posted. However this would give a chance for new members to see the older popular threads and would bring new life to threads which people initially got bored of.
There are advantages to showing threads with little posts first time round. For one a specialist post that didn't spend much time in the top twenty can be found by people who didn't catch it first time. Secondly a very informative post that was really interesting but didn't have much opportunity for comments can be seen by more people. Also someone might reply to a specific member expecting a reply but the thread has gone before the op sees it. this would give the op another chance to see the reply.
this is why I think it should be random, so a variety of old threads have the chance to comeback.

Posted by ljuban: how about startin a training section on the website for players from players, instead of tips an hint scatterd across the forum.
I used to belong to a gaming site that arranged a Mentor Program where the mentors would receive points for their time. Not a bad idea, not so sure who would be up for it though or if it would be of any benefit to BRM.

Nothing yet. Space is saved for something when we figure out what to put there

But how do you determine which older threads are "popular", if not based on views or replies? We have 4547 threads and 57811 posts in the forum, so that's around 12-13 posts for each thread on average.

I'm saying there is no need to determine which threads are popular. Just show random threads and let brm members decide if they want them to come back to the top.
Of course 4547 is a lot of threads so the chances of each thread returning is very low but if its random they all have equal chance. if a thread wasn't popular first time round its unlikely to be popular this time but at least it has a chance.

In that case, it would probably be random upon each pageload. So if you go to the forum frontpage now, you would see 5 random threads. If you click refresh or open it again in 5 minutes, you will see 5 new random threads. Okay?

that sounds perfect. Does that mean you'll be going ahead with my idea?

It only shows, as far as I remember, threads that are older than 5 days but younger than 3 months. Just to avoid having ancient old threads brought back to life without reason
We might also have to narrow it down further, so they cannot be older than 1 or 2 months. But we'll see.
