Hi I am a biochem student and I believe studying science makes you become a better poker player, what I mean is that us scientists always analyze things thoroughly before committing ourselves to anything.. Is there anyone out there who agrees with me. Being a scientist we use statistics to see if we have the right pot odds to call and if we are priced in and so on.. Please reply!

People can be more calculistic than other. But I think that being ir not a man of science has nothing to do with that. There are impulsive people and there are people that always think twice before doing things. But it is only my opinion

Mathematicians make good poker players and scientists are generally maths minded. Don't have to be a scientist to be good at maths though. And I'm not sure not all scientists could play poker even if they all put their minds to it. Poker is also a game of phsycology and sociology. You need to be able to analyse behavior and read minds. Scientists are not known for social skills. lol

I agree with that argument cause it takes so much time and effort to read not only a hand or oponent - the whole situation and proove me wrong but I call that instinct. The feeling of what I can do for my self at this moment involving or pushing others of that hand. On the other hand its prooven fact that science not nescesserly goes hand with hand in all technical skills. I´ve seen a episode of Top Gear (motorshow) where 3 top scientists where supposed to make a burnout with a sertain car. Can you guess how that worked out? If not "tube" it and have a good time.

Makes sense. Now what i would love is for you to try and prove it . Dont forget that for it to be accepted you must be able to repeat the test and get the same outcome. Science Vs Math, get a class together could be fun, post results here .
Of course a knowledge of mathematical can help you to play poker: pot odds, statistics and more.. but hold'em requires other skills too: body language to understand opponents thoughts, self control to bluff when is possible and to avoid panic crisis, for example.
Just a little question: 46 and still student ? I believed to be the only one

I agree that it would definitley be a good help to calculate the ods etc. but as others mentioned poker is not all about it. It's just a more complex game that requires additional skills. You won't win anything big just by calculating the odds. You need to be smarter than others, read minds and most definitley you have to be good at bluffing

I belive you can relate poker to lots of thing in life. Im an engineer so i can apply it as functions ie input output, cause and effect. A teacher might say its about applying yourself and preperation I think you see what i mean?
I agree with you boys: mathematic is most important in the poker game! but the only rules that i know is my luck! ahaha Continue to study boy and good luck at the tables.

I have a degree in maths and I'm useless at poker. I think impulse control is important. I win some and then I play high stakes too soon. Poor bankroll management is my problem.
