Are you quitting because you are not able to play your A game after the losses or because ''its just not your day''
I have played on after 4+ buy ins - when I have I've never played great poker so yes it's because I'm not able to play my A game.
When I have played on after this, more often than not, I have still felt OK but often your table image is shot and the other players expect you to be on tilt, even if you're not.
Your self confidence can often take a beating too and doubts can creep in about making tough calls, and thin value bets. Bluffs are tough too because of your bad table image.
Taking all this into account I now have a hard and fast rule to stop.
I presume you have some kind of poker tracker - so review your play after losing sessions ( if you don't already ) and then make an objective decision on the matter.
If you can lose 8 buy ins and still be proud of your play then by all means stay on the tables but I don't believe that many players can.
If you're one that can then fair play - it's a trait that could net you good profits long term but failure to spot a problem here could also kill your profits very fast.

For me, in this situation id change limits, its not the play that is bad but run of cards, somedayys you get it no matter what you do your beat, these times il drop a limit to save stress and keep my game going or let of staem as my str8 flush gets naild by royal etc. Its the old you do everything right and lose. and over the years iv found it to be all day long if not 2!! Think dellbo99 explains it well and it is a personall prefrence. And no matter what anyone says constent losing gets to you and you will play diffrent.

there is no right amount of buy-in. you should stop playing at the moment you feel taht you are not playing your best poker and you are emotionally influenced by the previous hands! It is important having control about that!
