Straight V Flush  0
ive always wondered this since i started playing but never thought to actually ask someone..

why does a flush beat a stright?

there are 13 possibly of 1 suit.... (11 if you suited cards in your hand..)

BUT in order to hit a straight you need a 3 cards in a sequence to hit.. (assumin again you have 2 in your hand)

writing this i thought of a possibly answer is it becuase altho theres 11 cards that you need.. theres also 33 agaisnt your 11 that can come up? but still i think the odds of hitting a flush are better than a straight??

Not really, because to hit a straight, you can have any 4 suits, but a flush you only have 14 cards in the whole deck.

and a straigh u could make with any 2 hands even with 1 card u could make a straight but with a flush they need to be suited or u need 4 of the if u lucky maximun 13 other cards in the deck Smile

As doyle wrote in supersystem its becouse Its harder to make flush then str8 . And it was mean there is less percentage to do flush before cards are pn board then to make a str8 .. thats why flush > str8 !

yea i no its suposed to be hard to make a straight but i uno the way i see it..

you need connecting cards. so a series of cards coming up your way.. theres 4 of number.. so that means 4*5 = 20 cards that have to pick from... but they have to come up in order so i uno ill just believe it..

but i no way back in teh olden days a straight did beat a flush im pretty sure

Hehe I thought about this too Smile

Offtopic:

Do you know that in the start of NL(back in the old days) a str8 beat a flush!!

Have you ever thought of which small cards flop the best str8's?

Do you know that with J-10 you can only flop nuts str8 if you use both cards you will allways have the highest str8 posible.

Basically the hands are ranked in probability the more difficult a hand is to achieve the better the hand the odds of you getting a royal flush are 1 in 649,739. The flush is 1 in 508 while the striaght is 1 in 254. When me and my friends started playing 5 card stud when we were 15 we used to argue about what beat what i.e 3 of a kind v 2 pair & the good old classic 4 of a kind v fullhouse luckly we have now learnt the rules Smile

oh i no the rules i was jus tryin to do the simple math of it..

cuz you think, or at least i do, seem to think that its hard to catch cards in a sequence.. consdinger if you need a 5 lets say.. theres only 4 in the deck.. but if you need a spade theres 13 in the deck... so thats were i found it a lil werid

Good thing about the book is that it doesn´t only focus on NL HE, it has different varieties of poker, told by different players, all of which were chosen to contribute by Doyle himself, so you know that they are good!
