In a recent interview with QuadJack's Poker Radio, Phil Hellmuth, 11-time WSOP Bracelet winner, talked about the drug addiction many famous poker players have/have had.

"There's a drug, I don't know the name of it, but it's something like speed. I'm talking about a really heavy drug. Many poker players have taken this drug in the past 10 years. Almost all players who took this drug has won 1 or 2 million dollars over a 6-8 month period. But then the effect of the drug stopped working, which left many of them with a drug addiction. I smoked weed about 25 years ago or something like that. But I'm not a person who's into drugs at all."

Phil Hellmuth also talked about his ADHD and that he plans on taking medication for it.

"I have had ADHD all my life. Many poker players have it. I think of taking Adderall (a salts-based medication used for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy - only legal in the US and Canada) for the first time in my life. When you have ADHD you get strange thoughts all the time. Sometimes there is no limit of what I can think. For example, I can play for several hours in a No Limit game and suddenly feel like I have to do something. The ADHD makes you do things you normally wouldn't do, so that's why I'm considering to take Adderall. And I normally don't even take Aspirin."

As a group of people is a normal thing that some of them take drugs and is normal too that some of them have a problem with the drugs. Poker players do things as us do things. Standard.

Talking about drugs on poker players, P.Hellmuth probably didn’t wanted to, but seems like he is advertising it in the best way: “Almost all players who took this drug has won 1 or 2 million dollars over a 6-8 month period.” What better publicity can drug dealers want? Now, when on the streets making business, they just have to say “Didn’t you heard what P.H. said? You can win millions in no time just for going on this!” After saying this, nobody cared about what he said after, the side effects of it.

Obviously players take drugs...

Poker players are a different breed of human, especially pro's, you'd have to be - there's a ton of strain and pressure.

So it's natural that drug use in poker players is prevalent.

I do not believe that poker players use drugs, because poker is a competetive game and using drugs causes you to lose concentration and therefore poor result concerning poker wise in my opinion.

I do stupid things when im not on my medication(prescription) plus it helps me sleep at night
 Somaks12/04/2012 18:54:47 GMT
What's new? It's a well known fact, at least for me that most poker players use drugs occasionally.
 grahamy2712/04/2012 21:16:46 GMT
quite a lot of my friends take drugs and they also play poker and some of them even do them both together.but as yet none of them have made any millions, unless they are keeping it well hidden

Today there's a drug for everything and everyone has some type of problem according to the Medical Field. I wonder what they did even 30 years ago for half of the things they say people have or get. I think I'll just live and die the way I was supposed to. Without any prescription medication!

give me some of that speedy like drug...NO ...i joke....but if players want to play while under the influence of drugs it their choice...if it makes them play a little better(concentration wise) than so be it...i smoke marijuana while i play most of my poker
 milehigh13/04/2012 08:29:08 GMT
i smoked pot for every day for over 10 years and was far more focused with it than i am without it(4 years) you can read all the government/ medical facts you like about how bad they are,but for some people they work, just like some people function better with ritalin etc everyones brain is different find what works for you and stick to it

i dont even bother listening to what PH has to say. the guy is a penis. he still believes he is the best hold'em player in the world and everyone else is an "idiot" when they beat him in a hand. the guys a joke. Thumbs Down
 GeneYuss13/04/2012 13:03:46 GMT
Almost all players who took this drug has won 1 or 2 million dollars lol. What is that drug lol.. I haven't heard much about drugs in poker until I heard Stu Ungar's story and his addiction to cocaine.

"Stop the madness!"
 DaDaShaman14/04/2012 19:37:24 GMT

At the Quebec's television. 2010 Main Event WSOP winners Jonathan Duhamel has been questionned about drugs in the world of high stakes poker. He said that he doesn't know professional poker player who use drugs to play better. He said that drugs users still a minority in this world.

The drugs Phil Hellmut is talking about isn't meth?
 Macubaas15/04/2012 06:48:01 GMT
I don't see why his statements aren't true, after all every person that plays poker could be called a poker player...

Now i also now in US the drugs is an important problem, so it's more likely to see players from there having problems with drugs than in europe.
 Fakiry15/04/2012 09:03:32 GMT
When talking about drugs, he should be more specific, because every medication is a drug, but when we read the word drug we tend to think about street drugs, which is something very different. btw, should those extra well vitamined juices that burns us and makes us flying be considered as drugs?
 tanzalone117/04/2012 02:18:17 GMT
He is talking about amphetamines and ironically the drug he is saying is so wrong is the drug he is saying he is going to start taking. Adderal is amphetamine PERIOD. They call it "salt of amphetamine" same thing just like methamphetamine hcl is a salt of amphetamine hcl=hydrocloride=salt
 elcimik03/05/2012 17:00:23 GMT
PH diagnosed with adhd!!??? lol geez thats why he acts like a big freakin baby. this man child would just make me totally laugh if i sat at the same table. i wish i make hime cry like a girl..please dont give him drugs.
 occultum08/09/2012 21:16:34 GMT
Yeah it's said and known that many of them took/take drugs. Some cases are pretty obvious others not that much. Once you are such a solid player.. you can pretty much push the autopilot of poker and still be profitable.. while playing a long sessions which can be hardly made without the drugs. But they pay the price ofc.. drug addiction and other damages await.. and you can't expect it to last forever. Anyways.. Hellmuth really looks like he does some nice good quality drugs when he's on tv .. maybe it's just him :|
