Brian Rast wins his 4th bracelet in the 2018 WSOP Event #23 $10,000 buy-in No-Limit Lowball Draw Championship as he became the final winner out of 95 player entries and adding the nice sum of the top prize $259,670 to his name. Rast outlasted a final table that included some of the best in the game such as John Hennigan, Doyle Brunson and Mike Wattel.
Rast said when asked about the top poker pros he played against in the event, "I only play against the best players in the world anymore. I don't really play any small cash games or even small buy-in tournaments anymore ... So, I mean, a lot of the people who are playing those games there, the big, big cash games are the best players in the world ... Those are the situations I'm in."
Rast entered the final day of the event in 4th chip position with 11 players left. He knocked out 4-time bracelet winner John Hennigan in 7th place and crossed the million-chip mark in the process. Next eliminated was legendary poker player Doyle Brunson, who, before participating in the event said via Twitter that it's most likely this would be the last WSOP event he will ever play. The 84-year-old 10-time bracelet winner was knocked out of this event in 6th place, earning $43,963 in what might be his last event at the WSOP.
About Brunson's standing in the poker world, Rast said, "He's played the highest stakes for 60 years. Longer than anyone and I think that's what really he is legendary for."
After Brunson was eliminated, Italian Dario Sammartino defeated Shawn Sheikhan in 5th place to take the lead. Rast eventually surpassed him when he knocked out James Alexander in 4th place and then cornered Sammartino as he shoved all-in and won.
Rast had more than a 3-to-1 lead into the heads-up play against two-time bracelet winner Mike Wattel. Both players stood pat after Rast thought for a while before making the cal. Rast had 9-8-7-6-2. Wattel had 10-7-6-4-2. Rast's hand was superior, therefore he wins the title and the pot money.
