Kanpur, India - A man bizarrely put his wife at stake in a gambling game concerning the Indian Premier League (IPL) and lost her. Ravinder Singh, resident of Govindnagar, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, who was reported to have recently lost all his money in the share markets, opted to put his wife Jasmeet Kaur, as leverage for a precarious bet on an Indian Premier League match.
Kaur only found out what happened after her husband's gambling rivals started harassing her at the boutique she owns and even at her home.
Kaur sought help from the police about the harassment and she also filed a complaint against her husband, which prompted the police to investigate the case.
According to Times of India, the authorities must first find Singh who reportedly fled right after he lost the bet.
Govindnagar Ajai Prakash Srivastava of the local police said, "The case is really shocking. We are now looking into the allegations made by her and investigations are on to understand the exact circumstances behind the crime."
The couple was married in 2011, which was 5 years ago. However, the marriage had been difficult starting from day one, says the wife.
Police said, "On the very first day of marriage, her husband, who was into share trading, asked her to hand over to him her jewellery and other valuables. Later, she got to know about his vices of drinking and gambling. Over the years, he either sold or lost in gambling all the valuables of their household. He was also planning to sell the house when this IPL gambling fiasco happened."
Srivastava added, "The wife said the husband would beat her up every now and then and once he even urged her to bring Rs 7 lakh ($10,442) from her parents."
