Swedish Government proposes Stricter Ban on Gambling with Credit

The Swedish government has introduced a proposal to strengthen existing regulations by broadening the ban on gambling financed through credit. The aim is to curb over-indebtedness and offer stronger consumer protection against financial hardship.

Under the proposed legislation, licensed gambling operators and gaming intermediaries would be explicitly prohibited from enabling or facilitating gambling with borrowed funds. Key elements of the expanded restrictions include:

  • Prohibiting operators from allowing players to enter into credit agreements with third parties for the purpose of gambling, such as by linking to credit providers on gambling platforms.
  • Banning the acceptance of bets if operators are aware that the player is using credit to fund their gambling.
  • Restricting the use of credit card payments where it is clearly identifiable at the point of transaction that the payment is made on credit - applicable to both online and physical venues.

If approved, the new regulations are scheduled to take effect on April 1, 2026.
