Legal sportsbooks across the U.S. are projected to handle approximately $30 billion in bets for the 2025 NFL season, according to the latest estimates from the American Gaming Association (AGA). This figure marks an 8.5% jump compared to the adjusted $27.6 billion wagered during the 2024 season.
AGA President and CEO Bill Miller emphasized the growing engagement around legal sports betting and its role in enhancing the fan experience:
"This season, fans have more ways than ever to responsibly engage with the game they love. Legal sports betting enhances the fun and friendly competition that make NFL games and traditions even more special. With strong consumer protections and a shared commitment to responsibility, the legal, regulated sports betting industry encourages all football fans to have a game plan before placing a bet and ensure their gameday experience - regardless of the outcome of a bet or the game - remains enjoyable."
Ahead of kickoff, the AGA continues to promote its Have A Game Plan. Bet Responsibly. initiative, aimed at guiding bettors toward responsible gambling habits. The campaign highlights five key principles:
- Set a Budget and Stick to It: Decide how much you're comfortable spending and avoid chasing losses.
- Keep it Social: Make betting a fun, shared experience with friends or family.
- Know the Odds: Understand how the games work and what your chances of winning are.
- Play Legally: Always use licensed and regulated sportsbooks.
- Keep Your Cool: Harassing athletes is never acceptable-good sportsmanship applies to everyone.
Since the U.S. Supreme Court repealed PASPA in 2018, 38 states plus Washington, D.C., have legalized and regulated sports betting. Public support remains high, with 75% of Americans in favor of legal sports betting in their state, and 90% considering sports betting an acceptable form of entertainment.
How the Estimate Was Calculated
The AGA's $30 billion forecast is based on national sports betting growth so far in 2025, combined with updated NFL-specific data from select states.
The estimate includes wagers placed on preseason games, futures bets dating back to March, regular season contests, the playoffs, and Super Bowl LX in February 2026.
