How Much Money will 2026 World Cup Host Countries Make?

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the largest edition ever: 48 teams, 104 matches and three host countries: United States, Canada and Mexico. But the headline question is not simply how much the tournament earns. It is how much of that money remains with the host nations.

The short answer: billions in economic activity, not billions in direct profit
FIFA's official 2023-2026 budget forecasts $11 billion in total revenue, including $3.097 billion from ticketing and hospitality, $4.264 billion from broadcasting and $2.693 billion from marketing. Crucially, most of those commercial rights belong to FIFA, not the three host governments.

That means the hosts' payoff comes mainly through visitor spending: hotels, flights, restaurants, retail, transport, fan zones, tourism taxes and temporary employment.

United States: The largest share of the windfall
The U.S. hosts 78 of the 104 matches, including the final. That scale makes it the clear leader in gross economic activity. A frequently cited pre-tournament projection put the U.S. impact near $30 billion and roughly 185,000 jobs, but that is an economic-impact estimate, not cash profit for federal or local governments. It includes spending that may be shifted from other activities, and must be weighed against security, transport and event-delivery costs.

The biggest winners are likely to be host-city hospitality, airlines, restaurants and entertainment districts. However, high ticket prices could reduce the number of visitors who stay longer or spend broadly across host markets. FIFA has reportedly targeted roughly $3 billion in tournament ticket revenue, reinforcing that ticket income itself is principally a FIFA prize.

Canada: Smaller match count, sizeable tourism upside
Canada hosts 13 matches in Toronto and Vancouver. Estimates cited ahead of the tournament project up to C$2.77 billion in economic output, including approximately C$1.46 billion in GDP, C$949 million in labour income and about 24,100 jobs.

Those numbers should be read as activity generated across the economy, rather than government profit. For Canada, the most durable gains may come from international tourism exposure and infrastructure use after the final whistle.

Mexico: Strong value from affordability and fan travel
Mexico also hosts 13 matches, split between Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey. Estimates have placed the country's direct World Cup-related economic impact close to $1 billion, driven by visitor spending and the tournament's opening match in Mexico City.

Mexico's comparative advantage is affordability. Lower accommodation, food and local transport costs can encourage fans to stay longer and spend more days in-market. But public spending, policing, stadium upgrades and crowd-management costs will determine how much of the gross activity becomes a net fiscal gain.

Who really makes the money?
The cleanest conclusion is this: FIFA captures the largest direct commercial revenue, while the host countries capture the broader tourism and consumption effect. FIFA budgeted $3.839 billion in World Cup 2026 competition-and-event investment, showing the enormous operational scale behind the event.

For fans following the tournament through bookmakers such as Stake, Sportaza, Jackpotter, Betsafe, ComeOn!, Betsson, bwin Sports, 888Sport and NordicBet, the financial story behind the action is equally compelling: the World Cup is expected to move tens of billions of dollars through North American economies, but "economic impact" should never be confused with guaranteed profit.

Bottom line: The United States is positioned to generate the largest gross benefit, Canada could see a meaningful tourism and labor boost, and Mexico may punch above its match count through visitor value. Yet FIFA remains the tournament's primary direct revenue winner.

They will make billions, especially if all hosts pass in next rounds! After groups, they are all in 1/16.
