Spain are world champions once again after edging Argentina 1-0 in an unforgettable FIFA World Cup 2026 Final that had everything - extra-time drama, a stunning winning goal, a red card, and ugly scenes after the final whistle.

La Roja reclaimed football's biggest prize for the first time since their 2010 triumph thanks to substitute Ferran Torres, whose 106th-minute strike settled a tense battle at MetLife Stadium and denied Argentina back-to-back World Cup titles.

Torres Delivers the Decisive Blow
The final was a tactical contest with few clear-cut opportunities during regulation. Spain controlled possession for long periods and looked the more threatening side, while Argentina found it difficult to create meaningful chances against Luis de la Fuente's disciplined team.

With the match locked at 0-0 after 90 minutes, Argentina suffered a major setback when midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off in stoppage time after receiving a second yellow card for a reckless challenge on Spain defender Pau Cubarsí. The dismissal forced the reigning champions to play all of extra time with ten men.

Spain eventually made their numerical advantage count in the 106th minute. Following a scramble inside the penalty area, Ferran Torres reacted quickest to fire the ball past Emiliano Martínez and send the Spanish supporters into celebration.

Despite a determined late push from Argentina, Spain held firm to secure their second FIFA World Cup title.

Tempers Boil Over After the Final Whistle
The celebrations quickly gave way to controversy as emotions spilled over once the match ended.

Players from both teams became involved in a heated confrontation near the center of the pitch. Television footage showed Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes shoving Gavi to the ground before grabbing Spain defender Eric García by the throat as players and coaching staff rushed in to separate those involved.

Referee Slavko Vinčić responded by showing Paredes a straight red card after the final whistle, adding to Argentina's earlier dismissal of Fernández. FIFA is expected to review the incident and could impose further disciplinary sanctions following the chaotic scenes.

Heartbreak for Argentina, History for Spain
For Lionel Messi, the defeat marked what could prove to be his final World Cup appearance. The Argentine captain was visibly emotional after the final whistle as Spain ended his nation's hopes of defending the title they won four years earlier.

Spain's victory capped another remarkable achievement under head coach Luis de la Fuente. After lifting UEFA Euro 2024, La Roja have now added a second FIFA World Cup crown to their growing list of honors, underlining their status as one of international football's dominant forces.

The final may be remembered for Torres' extra-time winner, but the dramatic ending ensured it will also be remembered for the controversy that followed. A costly red card, a heated post-match brawl, and the possibility of further FIFA disciplinary action brought a chaotic conclusion to one of the most anticipated World Cup finals in recent memory.
