Strategies for Overbetting  +2
Hi all! Looking to get some feedback on your strategies for overbetting (betting more than the size of the pot). When do you overbet? What have been the results? I have used overbetting occasionally when I was with middle pocket pair which flopped set vs. someone I thought had KK or AA. If I have the nuts hand I sometimes overbet to try to give the image of a bluff, especially if I have been aggressive on the previous hands and I feel the other players have tagged me as a bit of bluffer. Looking forward to your responses! Smile

just wondering if your one of these Canadian players i run into on fulltilt now and then , there are 2 in particular who I wont name who often over bet the pot , usually bluffing but I have been caught with 1 of them betting a set of 8s on the flop (A88) which I didnt put him on , the flop before I called 1 of his bluffs, so after a bluff thats gone wrong an over bet into a set may pay , but depends on who you are playing and how well they know or read you, I personally overbet very rarely, maybe into an obvious fish , or obviousy bad player or one on tilt , but your reasons for doing so seem sound , sometimes with certain flops like a paired flop a below pot (value bet) bet is more worrying to me than an overbet, but again depends on the table how deep I am , the players , stacks , all this must be consisderd before risking an over bet on the flop, overbetting the turn or river will add more calculation and thought to making that overbet depending obviously on what you are holding , the community cards, player your up against, pot size , pot odds , ect, ect, ect

Not me, don't play on FT. In defense of the Canadian players, it must be one of three things: bad maple syrup, too much beer, or the cold. Coldest night so far, -25 right now with a wind factor of -37. I can hear the wolves howling and I think a polar bear is sneaking up on my igloo. Time to grab my rifle and fire a warning shot. Back later....

In my opinion if you want to make good use of the overbets you should use pokertracker3 and have a live track of your opponents. If you know how to work very well with the poker tracker youll have it very easy to make overbets in any situaction because youll know wich opponents play loose, and wich opponents fold more often with overbets in the flop, turn and river.

yes I know a few players who use tracking software , poker office , sharkscope and the like, got to give some advantage I suppose but never used it myself, never felt the investment was worth it in my case, maybe for cash players yes, maybe one day I give it a go.

My overbetting is always with strength hands and sometimes the result is bad the same way...

Bad luck :S

Don't trust in overbetting. If you're playing against a LAG or a fish, it must be a bluff. But be careful because they are lots of tricky players who know it and try to make you think they are bluffing having the nuts.

You make some good topics mahdrof..
But its fairly simple, you do it for 2 resons/3, first, a pure bluff, second knowing a fish will pay and third to get a player of a drawing hand.
Its a risky move, you risk not getting value on good hands and being called on bad hands.
For cash games you must have this in your tool box, dont over use it, and know when to use it.
Its all player depending on when to use it, ie use it on a weak player who is likely to call it with a lesser hand, or against a strong player who is able to drop a hand (when you have naff all).
Using it to push people of draws is not so clever, wont take to long befor people know what you are doing and call to play a bluff aginst you.
For me overbetting works out quite nice, but tend to keep it for my 6 man game.

If opponents are call happy overbetting is a nice way to get a lot of money from them with your big hands. It can biuild the pot on early streets, so going all in is no longer a problem.

i never overbet a pot to be honest,I play fairly Mathematical and when i see an over bet to the size of the pot id usually re raise or call, even with nothing as usually its a semi bluff or full on bluff [usually being key word] and i mostly get a chek or fold from opponent,id say at least 7/10 times, ill be careful if i ever meet you though Big Smile
good post

I will overbet often if I put a player on a flush draw, or straight draw.. in a tourny if they call my bet on the flop, and I def believe they are on a draw, I will push all in, dont mind a gamble on the last card If I think I am ahead Smile

i fine alot of on line players play so diffrent from live poker, they do over bet alot of times playing on line, plus i see players check and hope to see anybody raise then they go all in,just to make you think what the hell is going on

Good point CJ, I do this too in order to give the person drawing to flush or a straight incorrect odds for the call. Only thing is, when they do call and hit things can get real interesting! Blink
