t’s midnight, and the London riots have reportedly reached Ealing. It seems as if there’s news of the riots spreading every few minutes, with many suburbs now either engulfed in violence or paralyzed with fear. There are common complaints emerging about the failure of police to react to incidents. But it’s clear that the police are hopelessly overstretched and are unable to react as normal. Resources are having to be placed where they are most needed. Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that police have forced the abandonment of football League Cup matches due to take place at West Ham and Charlton on Tuesday, and Wednesday’s friendly at Wembley between England and the Netherlands is in serious doubt. |
