Just finished getting the place ready for a blast from hurrican Irene this evening. Should be a tropical depression by the time it hits us here, but expecting winds of 70-100 km/h and 50-100 mm of rain. Tied down the gazebo on our deck, removed all of the chairs off of the deck and double-strapped the barbecue to the deck railing, as well as putting away anything that is light and can get blown around. Anybody else getting ready?

Hope all goes well mahdrof, seams like a big one. We get nothing close to that here, I went to a festival yesterday and sods law the biggest thunderstorm Id ever seen right above us, lightening strikes blinding you (every min or so) very close and a little scary, the thunder rocked through my stomach, actually felt it...but the show went on! GL mahdrof, dont wear red shoes and stripy socks like dorothy did.

Thanks B1gfoot. So far lots of rain and moderate winds up to about 70 km/h, but supposed to get worse tonight.
Your story reminds me of one of the times I nearly got hit by lightning. At an airshow in 1993 a thunderstorm swept up, and myself with several other attendees took refuge under the wing of an A-10 Warthog. During the storm I saw lightning strike the ground 15 metres away from me, and I think the A-10 got hit too. I say this because I heard a lightning strike with immediate thunder, I felt a "buzz" of static electricity on my forehead and the air smelled of ozone like it does when you have a short circuit. The guy next to me was leaning against the plane and said he felt the electricity too. Not fun.
Well it sucks that such things happen. I'm happy that where I live there are almost none of those events happen. But as for thunderstorms we have a lot of them lately in Poland, some massive ones too. I live like 200-300 meters from the church which almost always gets struck (is that how you spell it in past? ) so it's kind of funny. I like watching lightnings, they are dangerous but also beatuiful, but I don't like the f'n noise of thunderstorm

It ended up just being a pretty bad storm, especially as you went further east. Lots of rain here but no power outages; after the ice storm in 1998 we missed power for almost four weeks, and when they rebuilt the lines the really beefed up our system so that it wouldn't happen again. No damage, but some difficult driving. Funny part was, we had a Boy Scouts outing on Sunday to an electricity museum run by the utility here, and during the tour the power went out!

LOL
It's good that nothing seriously bad happened in your city
