I think only someone who is blind and deaf, living high up in the mountains in a cave with no internet, hasn’t yet noticed that the world is changing rapidly thanks to the huge leap forward in AI technology. Some people are thrilled about this, like children, happily using AI and eagerly awaiting every update, while others, terrified by the uncertainty, wonder how much longer they’ll be able to do the work they’re doing now before AI replaces them. However, it seems no one doubts anymore that the world will never be the same again.
In this thread, I’d like to hear your thoughts and opinions on this matter. Feel free to say whatever’s on your mind. Let this also serve as a kind of therapy for those who are more anxious about what the future holds. Or maybe someone, after listening to Elon Musk and watching the Terminator movies, thinks that AI will soon gain consciousness and realize that it no longer needs its creator (i.e. us humans)?
I’ll share my two cents: well, I work as a regular web developer, without any super-important responsibilities and with skills that are more average than outstanding, in my opinion (at least I can admit that, unlike many of my colleagues). This is my favorite profession, which has been bringing in some money so far, since I’m not a skilled enough poker player to live off my winnings. But my field is very, very much affected by AI. Okay, for now, AI mostly writes the simplest code at a beginner developer’s level (though maybe it’s already a bit better), but in a couple of years — maybe five, maybe ten — I don’t even know if there will still be a need for my work. I hope so, but I’m definitely worried about it.
I also think that the idea of hundreds of millions of people being laid off worldwide isn’t some exaggeration by incorrigible pessimists, but a very real possible future. Many people will indeed suffer because of AI, and that’s without resorting to conspiracy theories like “the coming war between humans and AI and «the Terminators».” I think that while a few companies are calculating the profits they’ll make by developing and selling AI technologies across various industries, humans havn’t even realized yet what potential future problems it’s getting itself into, given that we currently have a huge number of intellectual professions with a real risk of being partially or even completely replaced by AI.
I hope I have enough sense and resourcefulness not to end up unemployed, and that humanity has enough sense to ensure this truly revolutionary technology does not become the cause of a global social and economic catastrophe. I want to believe that it will ultimately be for our benefit, and not like it was with nuclear weapons... What are your thoughts?
