On Tuesday, it was announced that PokerStars and Viktor "Isildur1" Blom had decided not to renew the contract. After the "break up", Blom said "I've enjoyed my time as a Team Pro and I wish everyone at PokerStars the best. Now I just want to concentrate on playing poker."
Blom seems to be a man of his word as he opened up six $50/$100 PLO tables and played against EireAbu (one of the most successful PLO heads up players on PokerStars this year - rumored to be a Dutchman playing from Ireland) just a few hours after he made the announcement. And guess what? The match turned out to be one of the longest and most interesting heads up matches of 2012 (so far).
Blom got the best possible start and was up $200,000 in no-time. But once the match was about to reach the 2,500 hand mark EireAbu had won back most of that money. Over the next 800 hands or so Blom played extremely well and took about $320k from EireAbu. Things looked really good for the Swede at this point. But 250 hands later Blom was left with "only" a $50k advantage. Then the poker gods sided with Blom once again and over the next thousand hands or so he reached the $300k mark. This was the third time in the match that Viktor Blom had a six figure profit - after losing almost all of it. No one would have blamed him if he called it a day at this point. However, like many, many times before, Blom was hungry for more and decided to continue playing.
Anything is possible in a high-stakes game of poker...
Believe it or not but in the next 500 hands or so Blom lost about $400k and EireAbu was in the lead pretty much for the first time in the match (six figures). Besides that, it looked like it was "game over" for the day as EireAbu wrote in the chat that he was "sick n tired" and was going to quit soon. However, the match continued for a while and in the last few hands of the match Blom took down 4 or 5 $50k-$100k pots, which put him right back in the lead with about 202k. In total, the match lasted for 11 hours (over 8000 hands) and Viktor Blom had the lead 95% of the time.
