An Australian charity loses its license to operate due to the allegation that the owner has been using the donations for online gambling.
Help Save Furry Ones, the name of the cat shelter in Australia, was founded in 2011 by Nicky Hocking. Hocking was actually a former pole dancer who is a confessed cat lady as well. Her charity takes in stray and unwanted kittens.
Dini Soulio, the local Liquor and Gambling Commissioner, stated that "Consumer and Business Services (CBS) received information alleging that some of the funds raised by the charity for the care of animals were being transferred to a company associated with online casinos. I have made a determination that the funds being raised for a charitable purpose were being mismanaged or misapplied, and the license was revoked. The operator of Help Save the Furry Ones is no longer allowed to solicit funds, and I would warn South Australians not to donate to this organization."
The charity raised money using its website and Facebook page. Both sites are highlighted with a video by 2 children who had donated "all of their savings" to the shelter. The charity declared they have raised over $35,000 that will be used as funding for a new home for Hocking's kittens, after the local council ordered that the felines be removed from her home.
Hocking has denied the allegations and turned to social media, saying "I will clear our name of these allegations".
The update on the investigation has not been made public as of the moment.
Should it turn out to be true, this story of Nicky Hocking is yet another one that only goes to show that Australians are indeed the biggest spenders on gambling in the world.
