A Rangers fan was apparently in a rush that time so he placed his goal bet within 10 seconds only, but it made him a winner! Alan Thomson, age 28, who works at Tunnock's and makes their famous teacakes and caramel logs for a living, placed a 20,000 - 1 accumulator bet on 15 English football matches.
Amazingly, he won a sweet £50,000 just from a £2.50 bet at his local bookmaker.
With his winnings, he's now planning to marry his fiancée Nico Love in Las Vegas, place a deposit on a house, and he said he'll also treat his nephews and nieces.
How It Happened
Alan was in a rush on April 22, Saturday so he just skimmed through the football coupon at Betfred located in his hometown Uddington, Lanarkshire.
He chose matches at random, betting on whether there would be an even or odd amount of goals per game. He said, "It took me 10 seconds to fill in the coupon. It was the first time I have done this bet. I didn't study form, I just went for it and hoped for the best. All I did check was that the matches were all kicking off at 3pm so I wouldn't be hanging around wondering if I had won."
Feels Like a Dream
Alan, who met Nico, age 22, at Tunnock's said, "This has set us up for life. We've got enough for a deposit on a house and we're off to Las Vegas in the New Year to get married. It is surreal, we feel we're in a dream. We are Rangers fans and went to Sunday's game. We really should be sad after losing to Celtic but I can't stop myself from smiling. When I woke on Sunday, I kept thinking it was all a dream. We are the talk of Tunnock's."
He was so calm and relaxed about the whole thing that he was napping when the final whistles blew, "When I woke up, I starting checking the results on my phone. I got to the fifth or sixth one being OK and kept thinking that the next one would beat me. Then I had 11 right and I started shaking. I couldn't concentrate and got Nico to check all 15 matches. She couldn't believe it either and I think I let out a scream."
Simple Celebration
Unlike most big winners, Alan did not initially celebrate with a bottle of champagne and a swanky feast. Instead, he celebrated with just a couple of cans and Nico treated them to a £12 Chinese takeout. He said, "It is just unbelievable. We had already booked a trip to Gran Canaria, then we're off to Florida and then Vegas next year to get married - all for £2.50."
Nico was elated and can't believe their luck, "Our lives have changed forever. Maybe we'll ask the Betfred boss Fred Done to our wedding. We had to keep checking the betting slip. It is an amazing achievement by Alan."
On the Record
The £50,000 payout so far was the biggest prize won on Betfred's new Odd or Even coupon with punters gambling on the total goals per match. Alan astonishingly got them all on his coupon.
Betfred co-owner Fred Done said, "I'm delighted to write this cheque. It is a life-changing win for the couple and best wishes for their wedding. They are set up for life - thanks to Betfred. Alan's team didn't win on Sunday but you can't have everything."
