I was playing an MTT, 90 players, and it lasted a whole lot longer than I thought it would. I had just over two hours before an appointment, and I figured I could chill with some poker first. Bad choice of tournament for that, I know. With about 20 players left, I had the 3rd largest chip stack, and was out of time! That's when I started winning big of course. No doubt because my play got alot more aggressive.
Anyway, I finally lost; all-in with a flush, oppo quad 5's (!)

Yep. And next day another player can't play. So we continue somewhere next week, play a few hands, and another one calls it a day. That would be the durrrr-challenge on steroids.

Happens all the time. Some of these tourneys can last hours and hours. I foolishly bought into a tourney at 1am not so long ago and was still playing at 6am with a long way to go, I had a lecture that day at three o clock and I really needed sleep but I was doing well and this tourney played out big prizes so I couldn't bring myself to waste the opportunity. I knew I could sit out and make the pay outs but I had my eyes on more.
Other times though, I register for freerolls when I know I will have to pop out in the middle. What I try to do is when the time comes I try to double up myself as much as possible. I put myself in a bust or double situation so I can have the possibility of coming back to chips or reaching the pay outs anyway. The problem is the only people who want to call your all in are the ones with lower chip-stacks than you. Really frustrating when you're trying to go double or nothing and you end up with half the stack you had.

I recently noticed there are "cashout" tourneys on full tilt where you can buy out some or all of your chips in the middle of the tourney. I don't quite know how it works but the idea doesn't appeal to me anyway.

That's the kind of stuff that happens to everyone I think. I use to register a lot of times for mtt thinking i would have the time to finish but never did. U just got to be responsible about it. If u have plans than u gotta play it after that

Used to happen me. Now I try to do not register to any torunamnet if I know some family will come or if I will not be able to finish the tournament. I lost a couple of buy-in before I realized this. ahaha

If you dont have time to play then dont play. You cant enter a MTT thinking ill only last "X" amont of time you got to belive its gonna go all the way. But if you are in this situation dont start going crazy just play as normall and when the time comes to go, go and blind away hoping to make the money. You can do some math and see were abouts you would end.
Why enter a big MTT tourney if you only have limited amount of time? Some of these things can go on for hours and hours i.e. daily dollar played for 7 hours and bust at 40th with pretty deep stacks and atleast another 2 hours of play left. Even some of these final tables can take over an hour to play alone.

How about a "chips for sale to the highest bidder" - button?
Never playing if you don't have enough time. I usally play only on evening ( for my job keeps me busy all day long ) and results are not so good, of course

There is....Nearly
It is called "Sit-out", and all you had to do was to let the game run on and end in the money.
But I have made the same mistake myself. Was in the money, but had to leave. So instead of just "Sit-out" I overplayed one pair and went out (high blinds). Think I could have dobbled my money with a sit-out.
