Anyone catch this footage - apparently never seen before.. It really is kind of chilling to watch - also - simply awesome watching that amount of force at work, that's a hell of a lot of pressure sending that thing upwards!

I was actually watching when this happened in 1986.
It was horrible. Really.
The whole world was watching.
I think it was the first flight they were sending"civilians" up with the Shuttle, a teacher etc.

Really stuck in your mind for weeks back then.
Remember, this was 1986 and the launch, especially this one, was a huge deal back then.
Home PC's, Portable phones etc. were still more than 10 years from becoming marketable items.
You were 2 years old Jess. lol
Really set the program back for a while too, as people kind of lost confidence.

Horrible.

Yeah, the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger is one of those events where you always remember where you were when it happened. I was in high school chatting with the school chaplain, a really intersting guy from Chicago who drove a black Trans Am! When we were told the news he said "If man were meant to fly god would have given him wings." I remember getting home and it was all over the news for the rest of the week. Bad things sometimes happen when you strap a vehicle to a bomb and make it fly. Sad

I remember when it happened. I was young, but it was shocking. I think the teacher was a woman named Krista or Kristine. It was very tragic.

wow...been a long time since seeing/remembering this.

I watched this live when I was 11/12 years old. I was at school that day. My teacher had brought a television into class so that everyone could watch. It was a highly publicized/televised event. And teachers around the world were watching because one of them was going into space.

It was a tragic horrible event in history. 8/9 people lost there lives that day while millions watched.

Thanks for the trip down bad memory lane.

I hope you didn't think this was some kind of joke. This event changed my life and how I looked at it.

RIP

Damn!
That teacher must have had nightmares for ages, showing her class of 11 year-olds that disaster live.
Like you said, it was highly publicised worldwide and so shocking at the time.
It was the 80's, there was no Internet then, just TV. I think younger people nowadays have seen so much it doesn't impact them the same way anymore.

Obviously being my age the 80's were significant to me. This event hasn't even stopped resonating and may only when Humanity pushes that button or something snuffs us out. Its because of moments like this that humanity must survive and continue on into space. Dont mean to sound to philosophical about it but they sacrificed everything to further our species and should be remembered as international heroes along with every one who goes to space. Except Richard Branson. Hes already a boss!!!

very scary video.

as for the post above me id advise against playing poker for icecream with ten 11 year olds.

This is not a funny video you disrespectful punk. There were thousands of children watching this and it was a terrible tragedy in which everyone should acknowledge.

When this happened I was working 3rd shift and woke up to my wife crying along with thousands of other REAL people. I wouldn't wish or think there's anything funny about a tragedy in any country or for anyone. Your an idiot!

Haha I get a Thumbs Down for linking a video ? How mature, if you can't handle watching it, or don't want to for any reason, personal or otherwise - just don't do it.
