Revel Casino-Hotel in Atlantic City will be closing its poker room next month. Apparently the poker room hasn't made enough money compared to the rest of the casino games (black jack, slots machines etc), so it simply wasn't worth it for Revel Casino Hotel to keep the games going anymore. Below is a statement on the decision to close the poker room: After careful consideration and in an effort to[...]   Read more » Poker Room Shuts Down In Atlantic City

Understandable. If a gambler is losing his shirt at a slot machine, it is the casino who wins the money. If a gambler loses at poker, another player is collecting the chips. Only the rake is a profit for the casino.

Not sure what the think about the new management but it's clear that casino game will ALWAYS be more profitable for the casino that poker tables!

I think the reasons are obvious, still i think the poker traffic they have there is too low to keep it. The good thing is that the offer around is pretty good.

Poker rooms are only for traffic, and they just take too much space. The famous ones will remain, but most of them will unfortunately eventually follow Revel's footsteps

If the casinos just look at the money to space relation, they would offer only slot machines and get rid of the table games. But those things woud no longer look like a classical casino.

Well, they know they can't putt just slots machines, but basically they do look at the $ Per space. It is true for any retail business. They also know they have to bring people in, and slots machines aren't enough.
So, poker room are eventually mostly for creating traffic - but even at that there are "cheape" games - that takes less space than poker rooms

That is what I mean by "Traffic" - Poker tables get people in the house and they or their family also works on the slot machines. But in the end it is all about the bottom line, and if the analysts say the poker tables ain't worth the space they are taking they will eventually get out.
Unless the owner has a week spot with poker and is willing to lose money just to get his old buddies in the house

From what i notice from the online environment casino and poker players are two pretty separate groups...

Of course that you can find people from both groups that play both poker and casino but i do not really think that only poker gets traffic and from those some try out the casino too.

If I go to Vegas, I'll obviously go to a casino with a poker room - probably in a famous one. My wife in the meantime will probably hit the machines at that place. I know it's not much but the publicity around the poker world could be enough, at least for some casinos, so they will probably survive for a while
