A tournament series just for elite pros has been announced for next year. Alex Dreyfus and the Global Poker Index have announced another ambitious goal in their attempts to get poker recognised as a sport. Not many details have been released as yet, but the early plans are to host a 'season' of events alongside existing poker tours. The interesting twist is that rather than selecting players based just on their ranking for eligibility, it will be in a 'Franchise' format, not unlike American sports. Whereby there will be several teams, whose 'owners' will then carry out a 'draft' of eligible players from the GPI rankings. It is not yet known who these 'team owners' will be. Will they be famous players, or perhaps casino chains/online poker rooms investing in the format?
