MGM Teams up with Japanese partner Orix in Bid for Osaka Casino License

MGM Resorts and Orix Corporation have formed a partnership in its bid to be chosen by the Osaka prefectural government for an integrated resort (IR) development at Yumeshima.

This is the very first time that an international IR operator has revealed to the public the identity of one of its Japanese consortium partners. Apparently, the partnership between MGM and Orix was made around three months ago (December 2018).

MGM Resorts is the parent company of Macau casino operator MGM China Holdings Ltd.

While the Las Vegas casino operator MGM has initially stated it wanted to be a majority owner in a Japanese integrated resort development, its partner ORIX Group said on March 22, Friday that the end deal may have them hold even stakes in the IR consortium. It has also been revealed that a few Osaka corporations will participate as well in the consortium.

Representative Officer and CEO of MGM Resorts Japan Ed Bowers said, "MGM Resorts confirms that we are working in equal partnership with Orix to create Japan's first integrated resort in Osaka."

Osaka will most likely be one of the hosts of Japan's first casino resorts. The first wave of casino gambling liberalization shall involve the issuance of three gaming licenses. With an obviously strong support from local legislators, the already available venue for a future integrated resort, and its winning bid to host World Expo 2025, Osaka has been considered one of the favorite places in the roster to host a MICE property.

This team up is going to be a very powerful one - MGM Resorts is the IR operator that has openly committed itself to an Osaka bid, whereas Orix is a big financial group with wide interests in the Kansai region, including the operation of Kansai Airports.

This collaboration can be very successful because Japan is a country with great buying power. In the case when they did not have many casinos in their country, they will be able to gather many gamblers and to be a successful business. The future will tell us what will be here.

This is going to be a massive venture and it is going to be fascinating to see it when it is completed. The Japanese market should be huge, judging by the millions being gambled on the horse racing, and i cant wait to see the finished article

it would be strange that american dont have something with this new casino,it seems that only company from this country can make this kind of business in japan and other countries where they dont have this kind of entertainment!we will see what this will bring to the japanese as players!

Where is Tony now to comment on any development connected to Japan, lol? I mean kinda make sense, but kinda not. Would be interesting to know which japanese partner corporation has ties to the yakuza, I am not sure MGM knows how are they going to end up in bed with...

This is an interesting story and it will be good to see what the final outcome looks like. It looks like it is a very good opportunity for MGM in the Japanese market and also for Orix in the market outside of Japan. The success of this partnership will be big news for both parties so one worth keeping an eye on.

From my point of view i consider this: This relationship will be successful because Japan is a rich country. People will play in the casino and will bring profit. The Japanese should make a boycott like this casino not to be successful but they have no reason to do this thing. Blink

MGM is getting so much 'action' within Asia with this move I think they are starting to stepping on some toes which will bite them in the future.

as far as I know, the Japanese are quite a gambling people ... therefore, I think this enterprise will be financially successful undoubtedly .... therefore MGM corporation has certainly made a wonderful investment of funds that will definitely return with a large profit ... and for the Japanese there will be good places for entertainment

It is not only the japanese. It is the asians in general that are quite addicted to the gamble.
And since they are close, then they will have people coming up from other countries also.
I bet when they get bored, along with a trip combined, china-japan and vice versa, in order to
play in a casino must be something easy and usual for those that can afford it.
Tourists from these countries will visit a casino, no matter what Smile
