The backstory: On Friday night, while hosting a "Crypto Ball" for industry leaders in Washington, Trump introduced his own meme-linked cryptocurrency.

  • His website describes it as "the only official Trump meme."
  • While other Trump-themed meme coins had emerged in recent months, none had received official endorsement from the president-elect until now.
  • On Sunday night, Trump's wife Melania launched her own coin, $MELANIA, which quickly soared to over $5 billion in value within hours.

 

The numbers: According to CoinGecko, the price of $TRUMP surged by more than 600% from Friday to Saturday, then jumped another 150% from Saturday night into Sunday morning.

  • By 7 a.m. ET Sunday, it was trading for just over $72, giving the coin a market cap exceeding $72 billion.
  • The coin's website reports that 80% of the supply is controlled by the Trump Organization's affiliate CIC Digital, along with a CIC co-owned entity, Fight Fight Fight LLC (named after Trump's remark during a July rally when he was shot at).
  • These holdings are subject to a three-year unlocking schedule, preventing the entities from selling all their shares at once.

 

The intrigue: Trump has shown a strong interest in cryptocurrency, and sources suggest he may soon declare it a "national priority," according to Bloomberg.

As of writing, the price of the Official Trump ($TRUMP) crypto meme coin is at $48.83, according to CoinMarketCap.
