whats holding me back? in tournament poker i quite often make it to the money but lose out in the early paying position, on the rare occasion im sitting pretty with chips and in a good postion to hit big i have always ended up busting out with the best hand!!!!! I do find myself FREEZING when i have the big stack, so i end up not playing hands that have got me there in the first place, why? is this exp, knowledge, bottle? there are 100 words to describe this but which are the right ones?
Like everyone i have had bad beats that have destroyed my game but i accept this as part of poker and of course i have bad beaten others so i feel this cannot be any excuse for my shortcomings in the business end of tourneys, whats the secret , how do i break the barrier of close but.....
i have now entered my fourth year of OL poker and am definitely starting to get frustrated although my patience is still good, any ideas? go easy on me as im brand new to BankrollMob and this is my first ever message to a poker forum Confused

First, how you play does depend on the tournamet itself, lots of diffrent formats.
But in general going tight when you get a stack is a waste of having a stack, its not something you can cash out so use it and bully people and make it bigger, you dont get a better time to play hands you could not normally play.
But if your making the money quite often then im sure its just a matter of time befor you hit the big money.

BTW what do you mean by early paying position,im assuming you mean 1st place.

Now you cant bust out with the best hand, so you need to look over the hands were you are getting busted, its possable your letting people in to the pot to cheap, even if every hand you get to start is AA, after that flop you no longer hold the best possable hand, unless AA flops etc.
Knowing when to fold a hand tends to be more important than knowing when to hold one.

yeah everything you say makes sense and i know it, i think iv got some mental block when in big stack position due to previous BB i just got to get over it

early paying position, i meant just making the money and then crashing out

thanks for your time B1gfoot

Ahh, ok, then its worth noteing that for some bizarre reason you often find that when the bubble is burs a lot of players go a little crazy, so my advice is whilst on the bubble go aggresive and earn a few extra chips, as soon as it burst sit back for a round or 3 untill the crazyness is over.

Knowledge, experience, knowledge - one comes after another. 4 years of poker, i do assume you have won your decent cut also during those 4 years Confused

If you are not doing so good in hold em, then have you thought about changeing the game? Omaha, horse, razz, stud etc etc?

eg. I play hold em tourneys most times, but when it comes to cashgames, I know im way better in omaha hi, than in hold em.

And welcome to the BRM and Forum Smile

well at least you know where your going wrong, just play your normal cards what you play,
after 4 years of playing on line poker you should correct this problem and start winning more tourneys,
like kristan say knowledge, experience, knowledge etc.......

dont lose your bottle go for the winning line.... if you havnt learnt this yet after 4 years of poker
maybe you should quit poker...........or try another game maybe your game is cash games???

i wish good luck in what ever you do and welcome to the forum Smile

also you should know when to hold em or fold em Big Smile

Biggest change for me in my MTT game that saw me start to hit more FT's was to stop caring about being ITM. The only notice i take now of the bubble, is to exploit it. Now I play to win, I crash out earlier more often, back make more money overall, because of some decent cashes..
