I have been running into the same problem quite often lately. I end up blinded down to desperation and eliminated. I keep going an hour or more with no face cards. Money bubble is about 10% in most tournaments and I end up getting to a shove with ATC because I have 4BB around the time there is 15% of the field left.

Any suggestions for playing with no face cards, and making it just about 5% further?

If you get very low on chips, and do not pick up any monster cards, my advice would be that you have got to just gamble! I played a tourny yesterday, and just before first break I was really low on chips, one player raised before me, and another player called, I picked up 3,4 suited (clubs), I thought for a second, and came to the conclusion both players may have AK, AQ or something and thought well I may not get anymore good cards at all. I pushed all in, only one player called, they had AJ, I hit a full house by the river!

Sometimes I make the mistake of hanging on a little bit too long, and then even if I pick up AA, KK or something, getting doubled up still is not enough to raise my chip stack much..

Go for the WIN and not just the money, that way you wont be to cautious near the bubble Smile

If you are card-dead and play very little hands, you create very tight image of yourself. Occasionally try playing aggressively some marginal hands (connectors or suited cards). But only from a button or late position. Sometimes you'll hit the river, sometimes they fold to you because of your tight image. Try to play 1 hand at least every couple of rounds (if it is full-ring table). It will help you to last longer in the tournament even if you are card - dead.

Yes - don't get blinded out. When you're down to about 10 big blinds or something - that's the time to stop waiting for picture cards. Wait until there's a multi-way pot and shove it in with mid suited connectors or something like that. 79s even. Whatever - don't get blinded out.

And don't shove crap like A2o, K5 etc. You're much better shoving 67, 78, 89, suited - into a multi-way pot and hoping for flush/straight or a low-card board against your opponents pic cards.

well i did not blind down today... i was getting my spots early enough to bust against K2 suited and stuff like that.....

Try not to get blinded down to less than 10BB. Shove in a good spot when you are near that amount of chips. You must make a stand while your chip stack can still hurt the other players.

Thanks man. Don't follow posting on this thread, it's been copied-pasted from another poker forum. Its author has been punished for 7 days RIP.

Once the tournament has advanced a few rounds but your stack is at half the average chip stack or less, IMO you need to get ready to push, and sometimes with less than optimal hands, as long as you have position or are shorthanded. Waiting too long for the premium pockets will blind you down to the point that when you finally get a monster, three or four people call you and you are gone even with the rockets. GL!

You may be card dead in one tournament but it can't happen all the time. Loosen up in late positions and try shoving for stealing while you still have enough fold equity.

well i'm back on the forum lol.... if that happens no facecards, I suggest if u had at least a pair or any flush and straight draw cards play it, but of course waiting is the best advice like professional brm prof players are advising hihihi....

Waiting huh? Just go and look at Google for Poker strategies there are a lot.
Just go look for ICM Trainer so you can learn about push/fold phase a lot.

My suggestion to you is widen ur starting hand range when u have a different amounts of BB
in my opionion u are waiting far too long to be shoving 4bb (even if u do get a call or even two and come out winning that's only 12bb which is still effectivly short stacked ) as a guideline to start with look to be playing any pair and suited connector whilst u have more than 25 bb start narrowing those suited connectors to the high straight areas when ur BB is between 15 and 25 (e.g TJ , JQ, + ) and ur pairs should be higher to compensate for the slightly higher skill levels. if you dip below 15 start thinking about shoving and really start to widen the range as u approach ten big blinds. It's no good limping with a small number of BB purely for the fact that if u dont hit it cripples u even more. ... Any questions email me, i will sit in a freeroll with you and we could go through it??
