Hi forum

I'm an average poker player, and i make profit playing poker.

I'm able to sit down and play my A game for hours, on the micro tables, eventually ending up with a small profit. My problem is that i then tend to move up in limits as a result of boredom, playing a "racket" with, let's say 30% of my bankroll. I end up loosing, and now i'm sitting with a huge loss for the day. This encourage me to play even more risky, mostly resulting in further losses.

Sometimes i think i'm more fit for roulette than poker Sad

Anyone expiriencing the same? Do you guys have any advice?

Sorry for any language issues Smile

hm you are playing higher limits because you are bored? Aww crap! if playing for hours mayby a break will do just fine ,my advice make from time to time a break and if you thinking higher limits are not yet god for you then dont play in thes limits so watch out and good luck on the tabels Blink

I do the same thing Netsmasher..

I've been playing like that for 2 years now lol.. I've slowly started to build a roll that I aren't losing anymore.. But I'm finding that its not that I dont do what you describe any more, but I cut my losses sooner these days, doing less harm in a given session (ie; taking a break before busto). Still hurts though.

If you are bored, play more tables. Or do something else, and return to the tables only if you are ready to play again. Chasing losses is an invitation for disaster.

Hi Netsmasher.

I have experienced the same problem and I can say the best advice i've taken is to have a break. I have to lost all my bankroll and even lost $600 in one session by playing too high limits.

My main advice has been mentioned by Shokaku, try playing 2 tables at once at the lower limit, this will increase your concentration powers and hopefully double your profits. Remember 1 thing poker is a marathon and not a sprint.

GL to you in the future.

Big Smile

The issue of concentration is extremely important. I just went through a bad virus which started in my throat and lasted nearly three weeks. During the course of this I lost a big part of my bankroll as my head was not thinking very clearly, and my “A” game was definitely not there. When you say that you move up in limits due to boredom, at that point you have probably ceased to play your “A” game and should do something else. If you truly want to take a shot at higher stakes (who doesn’t?), instead of playing for hours on the micros, start fresh one day and attack higher stakes right away. Also, set yourself some limits on your losses, so that if things get rough you don’t have to deposit. GL

2 things:

First, i get the impression I´m one of the few who goes DOWN in stakes when i lose some BR.
My motivation is simple. i´ve never put a dime into poker and I never will, so losing my bankroll is not an option.

Second, I used to have the same ·boredom· problem.
Lately (the last week), I´ve been buyin into bigger tourneys, or satteliting into them, and the boredom is all gone!
No more micros, just low levels, and the play is so much better, (but still far from amazing).
It keeps you on your toes and is a hell of a lot more fun than grinding micros.

Just my recent take on boredom... Blink

I don't really see how you can get bored by playing at low stakes. Keep in mind that those are the limits in which you are allowed to play safely. Playing in the limits of the bankroll management is the first rule of poker. I strongly advice you should consider keep playing on these limits or your entire bankroll will be gone in no time.
I assume you get that bored feeling not because you play at low stakes but because after a session you only manage to book a small profit. It's true that you need to invest money if you want to make money out of poker. Also maybe you should consider other style of game, for example sngs or tournaments, where you can earn more with less money invested but you need how to play really good.
Good luck!

I have had an even worse record i am unfortunately a loosing player i might deposit $100 and then buyin to $20 MTTs etc and then micro limit cash when i am down to 2 - 3 $ then loose that i have been doing this for years now and would really like to learn how make a steady profit like players on here say the y earn $3 - 4 K a month,

I definitely don´t advise going over your limit.
BR management is what keeps your BR alive.

It´s just not clear what Netsmasher is playing, so i assumed he was grinding micros.
If that´s the case, you can play slightly higher SnG´s or tourneys, just not multitabling.

Might want to tell us what you play exactly, and if you multi-table Netsmasher?

I did this very thing! I was and still do well (until U.S. scandal) in the micro SnG's. Anyway I decided to move up from the $1+.10 SnG's to the $10 SnG's and this was probably a little to much to jump in to. Anyway I played 5 games in a row losing 70% of my bankroll which took me 3 months to build from nothing. Went back to the micro SnG's and have fully recovered, but now you know what my issue is since I'm a U.S. citizen. Good LUck to All!

Netsmasher, I can empathize, and welcome to the forum. The interesting thing above me is I'm actually very slow to raise the stakes but am more likely to after losing a bunch (even though it's the worst thing to do). Always feel like I want to make it back faster, heh heh.
