The most poker players usually recognise the 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion Jonathan Duhamel. Believe it or not, but Phil Ivey, who many consider the world's best poker player, had no clue who Duhamel, 25, was until he was seated next to him at a featured table during a $100,000 buy-in EPT event earlier this year.

well to be fair duhamel was a no one until he won wsop- he is one of those players who "made their name" by winning one big tournament- meanwhile players like ivey, dwan, blom etc. they become famous by constantly playing the highest limits. i'd say for duhamel and many previous wsop winners win was similar to winning the lottery- those who win the lottery also become famous for no real reason
But Duhamel did win other tournaments and made a lot of final tables too. Actually I think it's just Phil Ivey who isn't playing as much as he used to before the full tilt poker scandal.

It’s funny to see that Phil Ivey didn’t have a clue about who Jonathan Duhamel was. I got curious about how Phil did at the WSOP Main Event in 2010, and I found the explanation for him not to know anything about Duhamel: He was ”dramatically” eliminated during Day 2b. First he had QQ and went all-in pre-flop against Yuji Masaki’s KK, got a Q on the turn but the river brought a K. Then he got so short he only lasted a few more hands, and in the end, when all-in, he even mucked the loosing hand, going away from the room through the employees-only exit. Daniel should pay more attention to the winners of the tourneys he enter than Phil, as he also got out sooner than expected - during Day 3, after suffering a big cut on his stack because of a bluff from a young Eric Carr. The table was AQJ74 with 15k on the pot. Carr bet 11k, Negreanu thought and talked a lot and decided to fold, and Carr showed 63. Then he got J8 with a AJ8 flop, but the turn brought a K and his opponent showed Q10 for a straight.

yea I saw it already, it really made me laugh Even I could recognized him.. But I dont think that Phil Ivey use to watch poker in TV too much so if he didnt met him on some tournament before, its normal that he didnt recognize him

Anything could have happened. Like Ivey with the money he has won so far cares about things like that. I wouldnt. Or he just wanted to start titling they guy, or making him feel uncomfortable iin the hands between them

I think a lot happend in the life of ivey this past years so i guess he really was not up to date with the action...
Not sure if for many this is a big deal or not but i do not think it really matters that you don't know who an opponent is even he is pretty popular, thats my opinion.

To be fair I would imagine sitting down next to Ivey and he saying to me "Hi, whats your name?" I would reply "It's Marc & whats yours?" I think that would wind him up enough,,,,,,hehe One day eh!!

Oh well! Until you've actually been in the situation it's hard to explain. I mean have you ever had someone from your past come up and start talking to you and you can't remember who they are so you just play it off. I guess this is a bit different since there's the popularity thing here.

Well, he knows for sure who Duhamel is! I have a proof! At one point Ivey sad:"oh, you won WSOP, this year?" And I watched FT of WSOP this year and Ivey was there and watching it all the time + he was watching because of Merson who is his boy (sponsored by his new site). Since Merson won, there is NO WAY that Ivey would say that siriously since he knows who won it this year. Just wanted to play with his head I guess.
And for all those guys that says that it wouldnt be strange that Ivey dont know who duhamel is I strongly dissagree. Its like you ask Shumaher who Fetel is and he dont know...
