Thx for making it clear: I was so curious because Nicola in Italy is a male name.
If I remember correctly, I think Nicola is used as a female name in the UK and in Germany only. I think it was because the name is ending with an "a" and that's assumed to be the female ending letter if you know what I mean.
I'm not sure tho but I think my teacher (4 years ago when I still went to school) said something about that when we had a lesson about names and where they come from.
