Former Liverpool and Manchester City winger Albert Riera, 32, has been under fire in the past few days. Reason? Well, some claim that his contract with Serie A club Udinese was terminated last Thursday after he skipped a match against Chievo to play in a poker tournament in Slovenia, where he won €3,550 for finishing second.
Udinese announced that Riera was no longer part of the club on Thur[...] Read more » Albert Riera Missed Serie A Match Due To Poker Tournament?

Well this shows that poker was a virus for him to miss a game to play poker well he is stupid he earns so much more playing football and it might be the fact he needs the rush of poker that is why he skip football to play poker lol, anyway bad move from him and gambling looks to be a problems if it let you miss your job and you lose interest and so on and just cannot do your work!

From reading some of the newspaper reports he didn't even play a single game for Udinese so I am sure the sacking was due to them not wanting him and from Rieras point of view he obviously didn't want to be playing for them anyway. He won a bit of money so looks like it all worked out for everyone in the end!

€3,550 is really not a bad payout, but I guess if he plays in the Serie A he should definitely earn more per month than what he has won there. It was just one nights` work but risking to loose the job for it is not worth it.

Haha, looser leaves town. However in this case the runner up does.
Udinese F.C. is a very serious club and demands from all its players who are in the stands to cheer for the team when they do not play . go play poker was not a good idea for Riera

He was a football player not poker player and he could play illness BEFORE the poker tournament to attend and then he could have a day off legally but this combination was the worth. We do not know the buy-in so he won not a very big amount and he lost his job as well. Bad business anyway.

It's a bit crazy, that he would risk losing a very high paid job just to go and play in a poker tournament. He probably earns more in one day, than he would have for winning the tournament

He insists he parted ways with club, however, for 'mutual footballing reasons'. His contract termination may also be in no small part due to the fact that he publically tweeted that Udinese was the 'worst club he has played for'. He is also not the only person to lose their job over poker last month. Navy commander Timothy Giardina lost his job after it was discovered he had taken fake poker chips into his local card room.

some people here are mixing it the reason he wasn't there because he didn't want to it wasn't because of poker he make that amount of money in half a week playing in the Serie A
but the club dosen't want him anymore and he also desire new club
so his choice was sitting at home doing nothing while waiting for his contract termination or go play some poker
the press just decided to mix his departure and poker for more views

2nd place for $3000 was his winnings! That's probably no where near to about a weeks wages for him, so why oh why? There is one simple answer! Poker can take over your life and when u play for a bad team, why not go and play poker instead!
