Thursday was a great day for Swedish poker players as a court took the decision that tournament poker is a skill game like chess and backgammon. This means that Swedish poker clubs now can organize their own real money poker tournaments. Before only the government owned casinos were allowed to.

The decision that was taken in a court in Gothenburg last Thursday was great news for small and big poker clubs in Sweden. Now they can finally organize their own real money poker tournaments without any kind of problems from the government owned casinos and the police. The court decision was especially good for the 2 organizers of a big poker tournament in Grebbestad, 2007. The tournament in Grebbestad was the trigger to the whole debate whether tournament poker is a skill game or not. This case has been followed by lots of people in Sweden that has been waiting for this day for a very long time.

The Swedish poker expert and author, Dan Glimne (picture), says in an interview with one of Sweden's biggest newspapers that this is a big day for Swedish poker and that he's very happy that tournament poker now is treated as other skill games, such as backgammon and chess.

Oh boy, how i would love to see i law like that being approved in Portugal. Me and a couple of friends have many organized and structured ideas that we just can't put in practice because, when it started many people to get to know, police would come over and take us all to jail. But why it can only be "big money guys" to have authorization to have a business like this? Casinos, Euromillions... Why can't i organize a card tournament at my neighborhood? I could even organize it with a social responsibility cause associated to it... I think i'll send a letter to the political parties in opposition to see what they say about this.

Nordic people normally are excellent players!! Maybe because of their personality, but usually they play very well! Some of the best poker players are nordic. I hope someday I will play against some of them! lol
