Last week we reported that Brandon Cantu had a massive chip lead and was about to face Phil Hellmuth heads-up in Event #5: Mixed Max - No-Limit Hold'em. Cantu won the heads-up match against Hellmuth after some struggle, then he defeated Martin Jacobson from Sweden in the "quarter-finals" and Roger Hairabedian in the "semi-finals". In the final heads-up match he was up against Jonathan Aguiar, the man who bubbled in the very same event in 2011.
Cantu started the heads-up with a 600k+ lead, and it didn't take long before he had a 3-1 lead and seemed to be in full control. But Aguiar fought very well and refused to give up. When the tournament director called it a day, after over 6 hours of heads-up action, Cantu had 1,520,000 chips to Aguiar's 1,361,000 chips.
After some well-deserved rest, the two players continued the heads-up the following day. Many expected it to be a long and even match, but it only took 45 minutes before a winner had been crowned.
Jonathan Aguiar had just lost a 900k pot with KK when he picked up 22. Aguiar opened to 40,000 from the button. Cantu three-betted all in for his last 600,000. Aguiar snap called with AK. The flop came down 810A and gave Aguiar a pair of aces. The 3 on the turn left Canty with only two outs. The river card was the 7 and Cantu was eliminated in second place for €159,459. Jonathan Aguiar received his first WSOPE bracelet as well as the 258,047 first place prize.
