Poker Meltdown: Player Disqualified Deep in WSOP Europe 2026 Event

The 2026 edition of the World Series of Poker Europe has already delivered high-stakes drama, but one incident has captured widespread attention across the poker community: a player disqualification late in a prestigious bracelet event.

Heated Confrontation Leads to Disqualification
A dramatic incident unfolded at the World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) in Prague on Tuesday, when Norwegian player Birger Larsen was disqualified during Day 2 of Event #9: the €5,300 Pot-Limit Omaha European Championship.

Larsen's removal came after a series of escalating behavioral issues at the table. The tournament, which drew 379 entries, saw Larsen finish officially in 30th place, earning €13,000. However, his disqualification abruptly ended any chance of advancing further toward the top prize of €395,000 and the coveted WSOP gold bracelet.

Larsen, a seasoned competitor with more than $800,000 in live tournament earnings recorded by The Hendon Mob, reportedly became increasingly loud and aggressive toward both staff and fellow players. While it remains unclear how much alcohol he had consumed, at least one player at the table alleged that he appeared intoxicated.

Tournament officials initially issued Larsen a warning as his behavior began to disrupt play. Despite briefly staying alive in the tournament after winning an all-in while short-stacked, his conduct did not improve. Instead, it escalated further, resulting in a one-orbit penalty imposed by the floor manager.

That penalty appeared to trigger an even stronger reaction. Video footage showed Larsen acting out at the table, including slapping the hand of an individual attempting to calm him down and refusing to comply with instructions from tournament staff.

Following this outburst, officials made the decision to disqualify him from the event entirely. His chips were immediately removed from play, ending his tournament run without the opportunity to climb the payout ladder or compete for the title.

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) later confirmed the accuracy of the incident but declined to provide further comment. It remains unknown whether Larsen will face additional disciplinary measures, such as a ban from future WSOP events.

The episode serves as a stark reminder of the strict conduct standards enforced in high-stakes poker tournaments, where composure is often just as critical as skill.

Disqualifications at this level are rare, especially deep into a tournament, making this incident one of the most talked-about moments of the series so far.

High Stakes, Higher Emotions at WSOPE 2026
The World Series of Poker Europe has long been known for intense competition, but the 2026 edition has seen particularly heightened emotions. With millions in prize pools and coveted gold bracelets on the line, players are under immense pressure.

This year's festival marks a new chapter, as the series officially moved to Prague after years in Rozvadov, bringing fresh energy and larger fields to the European circuit.
Recent events have reflected that intensity:

  • The €565 COLOSSUS event drew over 2,600 entries and a prize pool exceeding €1.3 million
  • The Main Event has reportedly shattered records, featuring a massive prize pool and a €2 million top prize

With such high stakes, even minor disputes can quickly escalate.

Growing Pattern of Tensions at the Tables
The disqualification is not an isolated incident. Reports throughout the series suggest rising friction among players, including disagreements over gameplay, table etiquette, and time usage.

Notably, polarizing high-stakes pro Martin Kabrhel has already been involved in controversy earlier in the festival, with fellow professionals expressing frustration over his conduct at the tables.

While poker has always included psychological warfare and table talk, tournament organizers maintain strict rules to ensure fair play and respectful behavior.

WSOP Rules and Player Conduct
The World Series of Poker enforces a comprehensive code of conduct that allows officials to penalize or disqualify players for abusive language, disruptive behavior, or actions deemed detrimental to the integrity of the game.

In extreme cases, such as this one, players can be removed entirely, forfeiting their chips and any chance at prize money.
Such rulings are designed to protect the competitive environment and maintain professionalism at one of poker's most prestigious stages.

In Poker, Bad Temper Can Bust You Faster Than Cards
As the 2026 poker calendar continues, including the flagship Las Vegas summer series, this incident serves as a reminder that discipline and composure are just as critical as skill.

With elite players, rising prize pools, and global attention, the margin for error - both strategic and behavioral - has never been smaller.

For fans and players alike, the message is clear: in modern tournament poker, losing your temper can cost more than just chips - it can end your run entirely.

Tilt or what was that?
The disqualification of Birger Larsen at the World Series of Poker Europe shows how crucial self-control is in professional poker. Despite his experience, escalating behavior and failure to follow rules led to a justified removal. It’s a clear reminder that discipline matters just as much as skill at the table.
