PokerStars: The Poker Pro Who Became MMA-Fighter

Tags: mixed martial arts, mma, pokerstars, scoop, Terrence Chan.
Posted on 19 January 2012 by "T".

Terrence Chan, 31, has won PokerStars' Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) two times and has had a very successful online poker career in general. Apart from being a good poker, Chan's also good at Kick Boxing and Brazilian JiuJitsu, two sports that he has practiced for many years. In fact, his interest for martial arts have overshaded poker recently and last year he became a MMA-fighter and had his first fight, which he won on technical knockout.

In an interview, Chan talked about his MMA career.

"MMA has changed my life. It's the best thing I could have done for myself. Now I focus on health, fitness and the art. The sport has made me a more spiritual person and I have became mentally strong."

MMA - not a sport for everyone
I would recommend MMA to other poker players, but at the same time not everyone wants to be hit and strangled. To find the perfect balance in life you need to find a hobby you really love and do it 100%. And preferably is should be a physically activity."

Interesting, still to my knowledge more onlne poker players have other interests too in which they are actually pretty good Smile

Good for him that he can do both things right!

Patience, strategy and staying calm are 3 things we learn in poker that can surely be very usefull in a MMA fight!

Very interesting to go from poker to MMA fighting. Both require you to observe your opponent so you become familiar with the way they play / figh. Poker seems to hurt more from a mental standpoint versus the physical pain one gets from fighting. Wow! Don't think I could go that far, but a good workout is great for the mind and body.

Heh - he doesn't look like typical MMA fighter - he's rather slim. But maybe this body cover amazing strength and skill... He did good in poker... maybe he will be good at MMA too?

How different can poker and Kick Boxing be? One you play sited and quiet, the other you are always moving and screaming… But maybe for Terrence Chan, this two complete the circle of his piece of mind. After playing poker, it’s good to exercise a bit, so nothing like Kick Boxing to shake the body! And after kicking and leave the shirt all sweat, what’s best than sit at a table and play some cards?

I guess nobody wants to give him a really bad beat - he'll kick the sh*t out of you! One of the guys in my live poker league is a lower echelon MMA fighter and trust me - I would not want to get into a fight with this dude! Big Smile

well any sport if taken professionally helps to build you as a person. you must be disciplined, work hard, keep motivation and do not make stupid decisions- really good attributes to take wherever you go, be-it business, work, poker, marriage etc. more such examples would help younger people to learn what it takes to become successful.

Knowing how to rise after a big hit is another one - at least from the mental side. As much as rivers can hurt, a knee to jaw probably hurts more Smile

This physical activity i would not recommend it to anyone. Hard sports don't change your life for the better. There you eat beats and you put your health in danger very often. I do not understand why this professional player chose this method, but i say to this man: he must not to fight too many years in this sport. It's for his own good...
