Hacker took over Daniel Negreanu's poker account

Tags: daniel negreanu, hacked, pokerstars, twitter.
Posted on 01 February 2012 by "T".

According to what Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu wrote on his twitter yesterday, he had both his e-mail and PokerStars account hacked. And according to different tracking sites, the hacker managed to play over 400 hands on the "KidPoker" account and lost more than $46k before PokerStars stopped him.

This is what Negreanu wrote when he found out that his e-mail account had been hacked:

"Important: Do NOT send me any emails the account appears to have been hacked. Just landed in LA nice news."

When he found out that his PokerStars account also had been hacked:

"I was on an airplane home while this guy was joyriding my Stars account. He hacked my email and I got that back, still figuring out what happened. When I have all the details I'll share when it makes sense to.
Some of you NVGtards really thought that was me??? Man HSP has really done wonders for my image Smile"

Negreanu and PokerStars are now working on rectifying the hacking situation.

I actually saw Daniels's original post on his twitter account yesterday...

It's very sad things like that happend and i think he didn't had other protections except a pass. I wonder if the hacker transfered some money to his account lol

This is one of the reasons the DOJ wants to regulate online poker here in the States. At least when they do change the laws here they will be set up to protect the player more, maybe we'll see more pro's move back to the states. that should help the live games. =)

This show one thing (or maybe two):

- Negreanu has simple password or/and
- PokerStars have weak security and they must improve them.

And that's all...!
It's so so hard to hack account which is well-secured
Brute-force on account protected by AES 256 will take over 10 bilions(!) years

It's his fault... He probably had a simple password. And anyways, that's pocket change for him Big Smile

Yeah, his password was probably something obvious like DAN or ACE or THINNINGHAIR Big Smile
The money is probably not the biggest deal in the world for him, but there is some personal information that the hacker would have had access to as well. Overall I think it serves as a reminder to people to manage their poker account security like they would their bank account security. Use different passwords for different sites, change the password from time to time, and if the site offers extra security features - use them!

It wouldn't have mattered how simplehard his password was. The hacker had hijacked his email account as well and (obvioulsy) knew his pokerstars username. A simple matter to click 'Forgot Password' and go through the email route of setting up a new password.

I thought that everything was good secured,so that device what u can buy in the vip shop for people whit a lot off money in their account, chance's evry time the pasword, also that didnt help,so u see that everything whats made by human's can be hacked, like the euro bils of 50€ or 10€ the designer told the world that the euro is the best protected money in the world,2 day's after that
there was already fake ,not evrything is solid as poker rooms say,if a pc genius
want something he will find the answer and take what he want, and its pocketchance for him but who's paying the 46k? And if some thing dont belong to you,you have to stay away off anothers people money,or things, even if the hacker took 1 dollar,it's not you'rs.....

If you take precausions that are out there, there is no chance of "pc genius" as you say, taking anything from you.
About euro currency = I can also make a fake 20 euro bill that would most likely pass in exchanging office, but it doesnt matter euro isn't best protected money out there. It just means staff there didnt take all the precausions. It's same in pc security, most people download all kinds of garbage every day looking for that one thing they are interested in and after they find it are left with much more. There is a pretty distinct range of what can you do with your pc and it's far below peoples imagination.

1 of the reasons why i dont do any online banking

In the case of a player like you or me i agree but im sure Daniel needs more funds to play at the stakes that he does.
 bdbs12303/02/2012 02:32:37 GMT
So the hacker didn't try and take any money, but hacked his account to play and lose money. Strange risk for no reward... Surely there's more to it, maybe someone he lost the money to was in on it
 Serpang03/02/2012 07:35:37 GMT
Casino have to create 'Bank" to save our money , something like pending withdrawal, Our real account decrease and save to casino Bank. If we want to play again just click cancel withdraw.

Anyway I really can't understand why people let their lot of money at online casino. Cos they are so rich ? Smile Smile

Ho boy, this is a real security matter, first thing first, some comments talk about Daniel account 46k was only pocket change.....Hey realy!!!!, the fact that he as money is nobody's business, he earned it, second, every sunday someone is winning big on the sunday million, and i'm sure they would'nt want their account hack, we should be able to play online with some peace of mind, but it is tricky, so many people can be involved, hackers and friends of those, and also maybe some people keep their passwords on their e-mail account because they have multisites, not a good idea....hope security will increase ....i'm sure they can find from wich computer it has been done ( IPS ).....Can't wait to ear more about it, Let us know Dan and good luck at the table Blink
 Smilie17/02/2012 18:02:36 GMT
That is an unfortunate situation. Hopefully beter sewcurities can be added Smile.
 lupugol17/02/2012 21:49:44 GMT
Lol ... that is sad Aww crap!
 troyapaisa5520/02/2012 14:38:31 GMT
This is the price of the fame, and probably the hacker tryed to prove himself he could do that. I can understand everything is possible, but it is very bad for pokerstars, everything can think his money is not sure. Pokerstars must do something quickly.

------------
Somebody says that money is pocket change for Negreanu. I think a "few" thousands dollars are too much for everybody. Negreanu need much hours for winning that money.
 f0n0t20/02/2012 20:42:02 GMT
damn , sick
 DanyGR27/02/2012 22:38:17 GMT
something was happening, something that Negreanu said and upset some people. I think those hackers were put by someone to do this stuff. It's good that they spend only $46k. Could be worse
 hulkborges28/02/2012 05:08:50 GMT
is so complicated, they are hacking up poker accounts if the account of a pro site has no more security of amateur imagine, already know how the hacker did it? it is interesting that the guy lost money negreanu of the concern is with the image.
 Endre8928/02/2012 07:55:03 GMT
That is just crazy...I`m sorry for him because he kind of ,,work``-t for his money...
